Q&A on the science of growing hamburger in the lab

(AP) ? At a public tasting in London Monday, Dutch scientists served hamburgers made from cow stem cells. Some questions and answers about the science behind the revolutionary patty.

Q: What are stem cells?

A: Stem cells are an organism's master cells and can be turned into any other cell type in the body, i.e. blood, tissue, muscle, etc.

Q: Why is the meat so expensive to produce?

A: The technology is new and scientists are making very small quantities of meat. There are no economies of scale to offset the initial high costs. If more scientists or companies start using the technology to produce more meat products, that could drop the price substantially.

Q: When could this meat be in stores?

A: Probably not for another 10 to 20 years. It would take years to refine the technology, encourage other producers and scientists to get involved, and overcome any regulatory issues.

Q: Who paid for the research?

A: Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, underwrote the 250,000-euro ($330,000) project, which began in 2006.

Q: How is this better for the environment?

A: It could reduce the number of animals needed for the meat industry. Raising cows, pigs, chickens, etc. contributes substantially to climate change through the production of methane gas. Growing meat in the laboratory could reduce the impact on agricultural land, water and resources.

Q: How long does it take to grow a burger?

A: At the moment, a long time. It has taken two years for scientists to grow enough meat for two hamburgers. The research into the process started in 2006. Once there are enough strands of meat (about 20,000 small strands), scientists can form a five-ounce (140-gram) hamburger patty in about two hours.

Q: What are the implications for vegetarians?

A: PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, supports attempts to grow meat in labs because they say that will greatly diminish the amount of animal suffering. Donor animals are needed for the muscle cells, but taking those samples doesn't hurt the animal. One sample can theoretically provide up to 20,000 tons of lab-made meat. But lab-grown meat is still meat, and not an option for vegetarians.

Q: Is it possible to make other kinds of meat in the laboratory?

A: Yes. The science is theoretically the same, so the same techniques should also allow researchers to make chicken, fish, lamb, etc. Dutch researcher Mark Post, who led the research on the lab-made hamburger, started working with pig cells. He had intended to make a sausage, but his American funder suggested a hamburger instead.

Q: Can they make other meat products?

A: At the moment, scientists are only working on making processed or minced meat, because that is the easiest kind to replicate. Processed meat accounts for about half of the meat market. Post said it should be possible to make more complicated cuts like steaks or chops in the future, but that involves using more advanced tissue engineering techniques. He estimates that it might be possible to make a steak in about 20 years.

'Who am I to judge?' Pope's remarks do not change church teaching

Pope Francis addresses journalists on his flight from Rio de Janeiro to Rome. (CNS/Paul Haring)
By Cindy Wooden
Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- When Pope Francis told reporters July 28, "Who am I to judge" a homosexual person, he was emphasizing a part of Catholic teaching often overlooked by the media and misunderstood by many people.

In the words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the church teaches that homosexual people "must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity" and that "every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided."

But the catechism also describes a "homosexual inclination" as "objectively disordered" and homosexual acts as "intrinsically disordered," because sexuality is "an integral part of the love by which a man and a woman commit themselves totally to one another until death."

The church teaches that any sexual activity outside the bond of marriage between a man and a woman is sinful. Pope Francis did not change or challenge that teaching.

Pope Francis made his comments about homosexuality during a news conference with reporters flying with him from Brazil to Rome.

The pope was asked about what has been described as a "gay lobby" in the Vatican, allegedly a group of priests and bishops who work at the Vatican and protect each other. Pope Francis said it was important to "distinguish between a person who is gay and someone who makes a gay lobby."

"A gay person who is seeking God, who is of good will -- well, who am I to judge him?" the pope said. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well. It says one must not marginalize these persons, they must be integrated into society. The problem isn't this (homosexual) orientation -- we must be like brothers and sisters. The problem is something else, the problem is lobbying either for this orientation or a political lobby or a Masonic lobby."

Although the question to the pope was about gay Vatican employees, the pope's response was not specifically about priests who are homosexual, a question addressed in 2005 by the Congregation for Catholic Education, which was in charge of seminaries at the time.

The document was titled, "Instruction Concerning the Criteria for the Discernment of Vocations With Regard to Persons With Homosexual Tendencies in View of Their Admission to the Seminary and to Holy Orders."

The church distinguishes between homosexual acts and homosexual tendencies or orientation, it said. The church, unlike much of the public, does not assume all those with a homosexual orientation are sexually active, just as it does not assume all heterosexuals are sexually active.

Men "who practice homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called 'gay culture'" are not to be admitted to Catholic seminaries or to be ordained, it said, although it did not give a detailed explanation of what exactly constitutes a "deep-seated" homosexual tendency.

While excluding their suitability for ordination, it said, "such persons must be accepted with respect and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. They are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's cross the difficulties they may encounter."

New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, speaking on "CBS This Morning" July 30, said Pope Francis' remarks on the plane reflect "a gentle, merciful, understanding, compassionate" approach to church teaching which emphasizes "that while certain acts may be wrong, we would always love and respect the person and treat the person with dignity."

Pope Francis' words "may be something people find new and refreshing," Cardinal Dolan said, but "I for one don't think it is and I hate to see previous popes caricatured as not having that."

The current pope's approach to the question of homosexuality on the flight from Brazil reminded some journalists of the approach Pope Benedict XVI took to a question about gay marriage during a July 2006 flight to Spain where he celebrated the World Meeting of Families.

"It's true that there are problems and things that Christian life says no to," he told reporters. "We want to make people understand that according to human nature it is a man and a woman who are made for each other and made to give humanity a future."

However, he said, instead of focusing on condemning attempts to legally recognize homosexual unions, "let's shine a light on the positive things, so we can make people understand why the church cannot accept certain things, but at the same time wants to respect people and to help them."

12 hurt as car drives into crowd at LA boardwalk

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A car drove into a packed Saturday early evening crowd walking along the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles, injuring at least a dozen people, two of them critically.

Multiple witnesses reported that the driver appeared to be in control of the car and it was not moving erratically as it plowed through the crowd, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Firefighters were surveying the crowd and looking for anyone who was hurt, Humphrey said.

Twelve injured had been counted so far, with 10 of them hospitalized. Two were hurt seriously and two critically, Humphrey said. He had no details on the identities of the victims or their injuries.

The car, described by witnesses as a sedan or compact, was still moving as it drove out of sight of firefighters and the people who were hit, and it was not clear if the person had stopped or was arrested.

Officers at the LAPD's Pacific Station would give no information on the incident.

The famed Venice boardwalk is a cultural hub in a part of Los Angeles known for its eccentricities. It is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach.

Learning from the Tech World: Convincing Investors to Fund a Film ...

Investing is like lightning in a bottle, once investors find a team that delivers, they go back to them.

Writing on Slated.com's Filmonomics blog, Slated Editorial Director Colin Brown sees a pattern in technology investing that is worth noting when it comes to assembling a filmmaking team that investors will be eager to fund.? Read the post on Slated.com and find more Filmonomics articles here.

Summertime and the living ain?t easy if you are in acquisitions. Whether you operate in film or tech, the fish are now jumping and your scouting alerts are on high. Movie distributors have already been shadowing ? and in some cases preemptively buying ? films pegged as potential breakouts from an upcoming festival season that is anchored around those eleven September days in Toronto. Similarly, venture capital and angel groups are currently busy doing the rounds at various ?Demo Days?, stalking promising startup ideas that have been incubated through TechStars, 500 Startups, Y Combinator and the myriad other mid-year accelerator programs that now include Warner Bros??newly graduated Media Camp. No matter the season, it is clear that both film and tech remain fixated on landing The Next Big Thing. But how each world goes about that pursuit is a study in contrasting deal-flow mechanics.

Where they differ most markedly is in who it is that actually leads the early chase. In film, the gestational life cycle of even the biggest festival hit is typically spent banging on endless investor doors, submitting grant applications and combing through production incentive schemes, all the while trusting that the script will attract the level of talent that in turn attracts the right level of money. It is only once all that hard pitching, cajoling and juggling is over, and there is film footage to show, that most distributors then come waving their checkbooks. The solicitation onus, in other words, falls squarely on producers? shoulders.

In tech, however, it?s the money itself that does much of that initial sweet-talking. Sure, startup entrepreneurs have to pound the Silicon Valley pavement in search of backers but they do so in an inviting ecosystem where investors are very much the driving force. VCs want to see absolutely every startup idea out there. And so, increasingly, do seed investors, which is why so many have aligned themselves into angel groups in the hope of leveraging an advance look-see at the hottest investments prospects.

Such is this tech obsession with ?proprietary deal flow? that investors go to great lengths to steal a march on competitors and differentiate themselves in the marketplace for ideas. Referral grapevines are cultivated, industry events aggressively mined and positional think-pieces constantly offered up on websites all in the quest for an inside track. Early-stage tech investor Mark Suster says he first relied on lawyers as his own advance warning system, since they are the ones entrepreneurs turn to in order get their company registrations done. Today, he views blogging as his ?best source of high-quality deal flow imaginable.? We know this because Suster?blogged about it earlier this year.

Now compare tech?s open courtship displays with what happens in the movie business. Other than the occasional yacht party at Cannes, film investors are leery of even announcing themselves, far less tweeting about their financing strategies, for fear of being swamped with pitches. They just trust that the industry?s inner circles will beat a path towards them and deliver the goods.

Of course, a proactive investment stance does not necessarily translate into greater ?deal velocity.? For all their come-hither attitudes, it is not unusual for VCs and angel groups firms to fund less than 1% of the hundreds of business plans they review in any given year. But by virtue of sheer volume, they can lay claim to ever-greater deal-making intelligence. Having sifted through a mountain of proposals, Silicon Valley players have developed an exquisite nose for what constitutes the real deals ? and, just as crucially, a strong stomach for failure. The fact is Silicon Valley is way more crucible than it is cradle. More than 90 percent of start-ups flame out and yet setbacks are embraced here, not so much as friends, but as teachers.

Paradoxical as it might sound, investment history has tended to side with those who have made those bold, early leaps into the dark. Their secret sauce, at least according to the various VC general partners I have interviewed, has been based around ?pattern recognition.? Certain characteristics are common to even the most life-altering, game-changing, mold-breaking ideas. Research backs this up.?An often-cited 2006 study by Harvard Business School academics?demonstrated how serial entrepreneurs who have made money once are the ones most likely to be money-making the next time around. Regression analysis also done by VCs investigating which entrepreneurial attributes are linked to repeated successes found that a team?s interpersonal dynamics as an operating unit hold the key. The ability to spot such salient tendencies is what gives tech investors the comfort to back even the most outlandishly disruptive propositions in their embryonic stages.

The same should also apply to film investing. This summer?s string of studio box office misfires is another reminder that audiences still like to be surprised. You can only force-feed so many facsimiles of yesterday?s spectacles before people clamor again for unexpected characters and stories told in unforeseen ways. The problem here is that financiers don?t like surprises ? which is why it is so important that the most original ideas in cinema come wrapped in creative teams that signal success through their collective track record in making films that industry buyers crave. Just as with startups, these producer-led teams are the quantifiable elements ? packages, if you will - worth banking on. And the more that investors learn to reach out and find them, the better they will all become at identifying the real deals well before those festivals and demo days start selling them off at handsome, auction prices.

Kelly's focus on returning Notre Dame football to top of mountain

SOUTH BEND -- About 20 feet to Brian Kelly's right, hanging on a wall inside the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, was Notre Dame's 2013 schedule.

Beneath the 12 regular season games was listed something a bit different than last year's version.

January 7, 2014

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

"The focus has been since our last game last year," Kelly, ND's fourth-year coach said Friday during his pre-camp press conference, "is to get back to the top of the mountain, and you don't get there easily."

Last year's schedule inside the Gug simply said "TBD. Bowl Game." The Irish, who were coming off back-to-back 8-5 seasons, were the surprise team of the country, going 12-0 and achieving a No. 1 ranking before losing to Alabama, 42-14, in the title game.

"Everything that we've worked on since that next day -- and I mean the next day -- is about getting back to the national championship game and winning it," Kelly said.

This year's group begins practice on Monday in Marion, Ind. The Irish open their season Aug. 31 at Notre Dame Stadium against Temple.

This group already faces a challenge before its first practice. Everett Golson, last year's starting quarterback, was suspended for the fall semester over an academic matter. Kelly, this summer, named senior Tommy Rees the starter for the Temple game.

"He was the most experienced and gave us the best opportunity to win against Temple," Kelly said before adding that he did not name Rees the starter for all 13 games, simply the Temple game.

The four practices in Marion are closed to the media before the Irish return to South Bend next Friday for their first full practice in pads.

"We're like everyone else in college football," Kelly said. "We're extremely excited to start the season."

- Kelly on Friday was asked about where he and the university stand in terms of a new contract. Kelly said the two parties have agreed in principle, but there are details to be worked out.

"I think it's imminent," Kelly said.

- Kelly said that he still expects Golson back for the spring semester and that the staff, particularly offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Chuck Martin, remains in contact with Golson.

- Not on the roster distributed to the media was former Irish basketball player Joey Brooks, who spent the spring as a reserve tight end. ND has five scholarship tight ends listed on the roster in Troy Niklas, Alex Welch, Ben Koyack, Mike Heuerman and Durham Smythe.

"We just felt that at that position we were in very good hands," Kelly said.

- Listed on the roster is freshman walk-on cornerback Jesse Bongiovi, the son of rock star Jon Bon Jovi.

"Jesse has earned his spot on this team," Kelly said. "They don't look at him as a rock star's son.

(AP) ? Mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn suddenly finds herself in demand on national political television talk shows, and they all want to ask her the same question: Should Anthony Weiner drop out of the race?

Quinn, the pugnacious City Council speaker who has now vaulted ahead of the former congressman in the wake of his latest sexting scandal, answers questions about her embattled rival the same way: She touts her own track record while carefully disparaging his "pattern of reckless behavior."

But, unlike other Democratic rivals, Quinn has always stopped short of calling for Weiner to bow out. Truth is, she may not want him to go anywhere.

Weiner's recent travails have ended up giving Quinn much more valuable media exposure, allowing her to portray herself as the "adult" in the race and contrast her leadership to her married rival's sordid behavior. Staying in the race could make Weiner the perfect foil, observers say.

"The debacle that we've seen over the last week and a half now, is going to ? could potentially ? help Quinn if she's able to embrace it," New York University political communications professor Jeanne Zaino said Wednesday.

Quinn's campaign has taken pains to contrast her legislative scorecard while ruling the City Council for seven years to Weiner's thin track record in Congress, where in 12 years he passed only one bill.

And political experts love Quinn's chances against Weiner if they are the two candidates to make it into a runoff, which could happen if no one achieves 40 percent of the vote in the Sept. 10 primary.

"That's the matchup she wants," said Doug Muzzio, political science professor at Baruch College. "Her strengths look the best against him, especially since he has again revealed himself to be a self-destructive candidate."

The potential benefits for Quinn if Weiner drops out are more difficult to discern since there's little overlap in their pools of voter support. A Quinnipiac College poll released this week shows Quinn's support rising only from 27 percent to 30 percent of likely Democratic voters if Weiner drops out.

That poll, which surveyed 446 likely voters, had Quinn followed by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio at 21 percent, ex-city comptroller Bill Thompson at 20 percent and Weiner at 16 percent.

Quinn, who's looking to become the city's first female and openly gay mayor, has continued a brisk campaign schedule amid the latest Weiner revelations. She's trotted out the support of women's groups and unveiled her first TV ad a week before the scandal broke.

The final line of the 30-second ad is a clear shot at Weiner, who talks incessantly about the middle class.

"I'm Christine Quinn," she says. "While others talk about fighting for the middle class, I've been doing it."

Quinn's resurgence has come as Weiner's campaign has been besieged by questions from the media and voters about exchanging sexually explicit messages with women online even after that behavior forced him from Congress.

On Wednesday, Weiner's chief spokeswoman apologized for an expletive-laced tirade aimed at a former intern who wrote an unflattering first-person article about her experience working on Weiner's campaign.

In stark contrast to Quinn, de Blasio and Thompson have forcefully called for the scandal-scarred candidate to bow out. Neither candidate had climbed higher than third in any poll before Weiner was revealed to have continued sending illicit messages even after he resigned from Congress in 2011.

Political analysts say de Blasio was most hurt by Weiner's earlier success, since the two men cut a similar political persona: progressive, feisty, with their base of support found in the boroughs outside Manhattan. De Blasio's second-place showing in this week's Quinnipiac poll is by far his strongest in the race so far.

Thompson, the race's only black candidate, also would appear to benefit from Weiner's departure.

Thompson's team has spoken openly of its hope to win decisively among black voters, yet Weiner has remained the most popular candidate among them. Weiner pulled in 24 percent of black voters in the Quinnipiac poll, and Thompson would seem poised to grab more of them than de Blasio or Quinn.

Weiner has vowed to stay in the race to succeed independent Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

WikiLeaks On Bradley Manning Verdict: 'Extremism From The Obama Administration'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange branded Pfc. Bradley Manning's espionage conviction Tuesday an episode of "national security extremism" while other supporters expressed relief that he was acquitted of the most serious charge. Among Manning's critics, House intelligence officials said justice was served.

From the courtroom to world capitals, people absorbed the meaning of a verdict that cleared the soldier of a charge of aiding the enemy, which would have carried a potential life sentence, but convicted him on other counts that, together, could also mean a life behind bars. Manning faces up to 136 years in prison if given maximum penalties in a sentencing hearing that starts Wednesday.

In Washington, the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Intelligence Committee joined in a statement declaring "justice has been served today."

"Manning harmed our national security, violated the public's trust, and now stands convicted of multiple serious crimes," said Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, chairman of the House Intelligence committee, and Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the panel's top Democrat.

Assange, whose website served as the conduit for exposing Manning's spilled U.S. secrets to the world, saw nothing to cheer in the mixed verdict.

"It is a dangerous precedent and an example of national security extremism," he told reporters at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, which is sheltering him. "This has never been a fair trial."

Glenn Greenwald, the journalist, commentator and former civil rights lawyer who first reported Edward Snowden's leaks of National Security Agency surveillance programs, said Manning's acquittal on the charge of aiding the enemy represented a "tiny sliver of justice."

And Christian Stroebele, a German lawmaker for the opposition Green Party, tweeted: "Manning has won respect by uncovering the U.S.'s murderous warfare in Iraq."

But the advocacy group Reporters Without Borders said the verdict is a chilling warning to whistleblowers, "against whom the Obama administration has been waging an unprecedented offensive," and threatens the future of investigative journalism because intimidated sources might fall quiet.

Another advocate of less government secrecy, Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists, questioned whether the implications will be so dire, given the extraordinary nature of the Manning case.

"This was a massive hemorrhage of government records, and it's not too surprising that it elicited a strong reaction from the government," Aftergood said.

"Does that mean that every leak from every journalist is likely to do the same?" he asked. "No it doesn't. Most journalists are not in the business of publishing classified documents, they're in the business of reporting the news, which is not the same thing. This is not good news for journalism, but it's not the end of the world, either."

Outside the courtroom, Manning supporters gave his lawyer, David Coombs, a round of applause and shouted "thank you." But they also pressed him on what the verdict meant for the soldier's fate.

"Today is a good day," Coombs said, "but Bradley is by no means out of the fire."

Manning acknowledged giving WikiLeaks more than 700,000 battlefield reports and diplomatic cables, and video of a 2007 U.S. helicopter attack that killed civilians in Iraq, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver. He said during a pretrial hearing he leaked the material to expose U.S military "bloodlust" and diplomatic deceitfulness but did not believe his actions would harm the country.

His defense portrayed him as a naive but well-intentioned figure. Prosecutors branded him an anarchist and traitor.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, welcomed the outcome.

"Bradley Manning endangered the security of the United States and the lives of his own comrades in uniform when he intentionally disclosed vast amounts of classified data," he said. "His conviction should stand as an example to those who are tempted to violate a sacred public trust in pursuit of notoriety, fame, or their own political agenda."

Many supporters in and outside the courtroom wore black T-shirts with "truth" on them to show they consider him a whistleblower just trying to expose government misconduct.

"The government's priorities are upside down," Widney Brown, senior director of international law and policy for Amnesty International, said at the scene.

Officials have "refused to investigate credible allegations of torture and other crimes under international law despite overwhelming evidence," Brown said, but "decided to prosecute Manning, who it seems was trying to do the right thing ? reveal credible evidence of unlawful behavior by the government."

"It seems clear that the government was seeking to intimidate anyone who might consider revealing valuable information in the future," said Ben Wizner of the ACLU Speech, Privacy & Technology Project.

Overseas, Anatoly Kucherena, the Russian lawyer who's been working with Snowden, merely said: "All cases are individual. We shouldn't take the Manning case and compare it to Snowden."

Tour This Tech Innovation Hub in the Middle of Africa

LUSAKA, Zambia ? In early 2011 Google team members visited the University of Zambia to encourage students to participate in the Africa Android Competition. When one student asked the Google presenters what Android was ? and only three people in the room knew the answer ? a light bulb went off in Simunza Muyangana's head.

"I remember leaving there thinking, 'Wow, how do we correct this?'" he told Mashable two years later.

Together with Lukonga Lindunda and Silumesii Maboshe, Muyangaga began organizing technology skills workshops, such as a weekend Ruby on Rails crash course, a session on how to set up a server and a two-week workshop on developing for Android led by an out-of-town instructor.

As these meetups gained popularity, the trio decided to formally name the group BongoHive (meaning "collective of brains," derived from the local Bemba word "bongo" for brain or head).

After receiving one year of funding from the Indigo Trust and Google for Entrepreneurs, BongoHive opened its first physical home in November 2012, nestled in a house on a quiet, tree-lined street, just blocks behind one of Lusaka's busiest shopping malls. The residential home-turned-innovation-hub is hardly distinguishable from the other single-family units it's surrounded by ? save the boldly painted logo on its entryway.

BongoHive, Muyangaga explains, is both the name of the community and the physical location where the community meets. The co-working space offers entrepreneurs free Internet and serves as a pre-incubator for fledging companies looking to learn the basics of accounting, market research and running a business. The founders plan to launch a paid consulting service in the coming months, which will advise companies navigating the digital world.

The community now numbers around 800 people, counting those who "like" BongoHive on Facebook, receive its newsletter and attend its different groups and classes. While the vibrant tech community in Zambia may seem isolated, it's part of a network called AfriLabs, which consists of similar institutions in countries like Kenya, Cameroon and Uganda.

"Since we're the first ones to start these hubs in our own countries, it's where we can exchange notes, help define some things and learn what to avoid from other people's mistakes," Muyangaga says.

Next month BongoHive plans to launch an entrepreneur mentorship program that will match its community with online mentors, who can offer advice via email from outside the Lusaka community.

"We are more likely to learn from Kenya than we are from South Africa, because South Africa has a much larger middle class," Muyangaga says. "When South Africa says, 'We've got this great app that's a copy of one from Silicon Valley,' we say, 'That's great, but it won't fly in Zambia because it's a totally different market and it's not likely to work here.'"

Muyangaga said one of his mantras came out of a widely circulated discussion of dead aid following TED Africa in 2007, in which Jennifer Brea wrote, "Many of Africa's best and brightest become bureaucrats or NGO workers when they should be scientists or entrepreneurs."

Given the economic history of a country like Zambia, which has spent much of its recent history in severe debt, Muyangaga says he understands why many of his countrymen seek security in their careers. However, he believes entrepreneurship will be the fix.

"Zambia has a large unemployment base, poor college and high school graduation rates, and an increasing youth population that cannot find jobs. I don't think the government will sort that out soon," Muyangaga says. "I lean towards the idea that encouraging people to start small businesses is going to sort out this problem quicker than if large corporations come in. If you've got a certain amount of passion for technology and look at problems in a way you that you weren't taught in school, you should venture into your own enterprise, and the worst that you can say is you tried."

Zoe Fox traveled to Zambia on a fellowship from the International Reporting Project

Manufacturing drop shows weakness in Japan economy

(AP) ? Japan's industrial output fell in June for the first time in five months, the government said Tuesday as it released data highlighting the fragility of the recovery in the world's No. 3 economy.

Manufacturing slipped 3.3 percent from the month before in June and was 4.8 percent lower than a year before, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said.

Such indicators suggest weaker growth in China may be sapping some of the momentum from the recovery.

However, other data showed the jobless rate edging to 3.9 percent, its lowest level since October 2008, when the economy was slammed by the global financial crisis. The jobless rate had remained at 4.1 percent during the previous few months.

The most recent data have officials questioning whether the government should go ahead with a promised sales tax increase that economists say could derail progress in restoring growth and breaking free of deflation.

The central bank governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, said Monday he believes the recovery is strong enough to weather a tax hike, which is needed to help redress ballooning deficits that have taken Japan's national debt to record high levels.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has claimed progress with his "Abenomics" strategy of fighting deflation with aggressive monetary easing and strong government spending. But he has indicated he may consider amending the plan for a 3 percent increase, to 8 percent, next April.

Figures released earlier showed consumer prices rising 0.4 percent in June, but core inflation which excludes food and energy prices remained negative. Costs for food and energy have largely been pushed higher by the sharp weakening of the Japanese yen, which drives up costs for imported food and energy in this resource-scarce nation.

Prices for desktop computers, imported ground meat and canned fish rose, along with electricity and gas rates. The rise in food prices extends across many categories, from jam to chicken powder, bread to salad dressing.

But prices for many other consumer goods, such as DVD players and digital cameras, have continued to fall.

Fresh from a victory for his Liberal Democratic Party in upper house parliamentary elections, Abe has acknowledged that despite signs of improvement, many Japanese have yet to feel a boost from his policies. He has vowed to press ahead with deeper and more fundamental economic reforms intended to help restore Japan's competitiveness.

A key factor will be whether companies begin to invest more and raise wages, to help drive a recovery in consumer demand that accounts for most of Japan's economic growth.

While sales are up by double digits at Tokyo's toniest department stores, overall retail sales fell in June from the month before, with surveys showing consumer spending is slowing, Marcel Thieliant, an economist for Capital Economics, said in a report Monday.

"Looking ahead, there are a number of reasons to doubt that the recent strong run of consumer spending can continue," he said, noting that a 70 trillion yen ($716 billion) increase in household wealth due to the stock price rally earlier in the year accounts for only a small part of overall household wealth.

"With inflation now rising, income growth has to pick up as well for households to maintain their spending power," he said. "The overwhelming majority of households views inflation as negative, and may rein in spending in response."

Site wide links are links that are found on all of your website?s pages. Quite often, site-wide links are featured on the very bottom of a page?s design. If you have a page on your site that you would like everyone to view, you should implement site wide links. The site-wide links will be visible for them at the bottom of the page. It?s also possible to arrange links in a menu that provides a static way to navigate the entire site easily. An organized menu with descriptions for each link is most effective.

While your meta tags are not visible to your website visitors, they are very important for the search engine spiders because they help search engines find your website and determine the content. Your most important meta tags are the ones that you use first, and they should always be relevant to the content of your website. You will need to use meta tags strategically, but do not go overboard. Before placing any keywords, do research on which ones are popular now within your industry and choose those relevant to your target audience.

HTML tags give the text within a certain attribute (bold, italic, etc.). The more significant a certain piece of text is, the more likely it is that an experienced webmaster will put it in bold. Bold tagging is placed on titles that are meaningful and important within the text. Make sure your main title has the tag, and that you use sub-lines for each separate section of the text. If you do this, your website will be easier to understand, and search engine optimization will be increased. Using keywords in your titles helps identify what the important content of your webpage is.

Even though many webmasters use SEO and other marketing methods that are sure to work, you may also want to consider things like internet marketing. It is common for internet content, such as videos and websites, to go viral since the web is mostly driven by dedicated followers. This is basically word-of-mouth marketing on steroids. Word about the item spreads like wildfire across the internet. When content goes viral, it enjoys a brief, but intense surge of popularity, which can give your website traffic a great boost. If you develop unique and amusing content, you never know what good things could happen. Syrian troops consolidating gains in key district in central Homs region

Syrian government forces backed by Lebanese Hezbollah militants were consolidating their control over a key rebel district in central Syria Sunday, activists said.

The military moves came a day after they expelled rebels from a 13th century landmark mosque they controlled for more than a year.

State-run Syrian TV broadcast live coverage from Khaldiyeh, an embattled northern neighborhood in Homs, where the army has been advancing. Video showed extensive destruction. Activists said most of the buildings in the mainly residential district were no longer fit to live in.

Elsewhere, an opposition group said the death toll from nearly two weeks of clashes between al-Qaida-linked fighters and Kurdish militiamen in northeastern Syria stands at 120. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the dead include 79 fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Jabhat al-Nusra, both al-Qaida-affiliated rebel groups. The group monitors the Syrian war through a network of activists on the ground,

This latest round of fighting flared in Ras al-Ayn on July 6 in the predominantly Kurdish Hassakeh province in the north, near the Turkish border. Kurdish gunmen are fighting to expel the militants, whom they see as a threat.

After capturing the strategic town of Qusair near the Lebanon border last month, government troops launched an offensive on rebel-held areas in Homs, Syria's third largest city, late in June. They have been pushing into Khaldiyeh and other neighborhoods in the Old City that have been under opposition control since 2011.

An unidentified Syrian army commander standing before a destroyed building in Khaldiyeh told an embedded state TV reporter that the military expected to "liberate" the last part of Khaldiyeh within the next two days.

Syrian government forces captured the ancient Khalid Ibn al-Walid Mosque in Khaldiyeh on Saturday. Syrian TV aired a report with video from inside the mosque, showing heavy damage. The video showed debris strewn on the floor and a portion of the mosque appeared to have been burned.

The mosque, famous for its nine domes and two minarets, has been a symbol for rebels in the city that is known as "the capital of the revolution." On Monday, government troops shelled the mosque, damaging the tomb of Ibn al-Walid, a revered figure in Islam. Video showed the tomb's roof knocked down.

The Observatory and other activists said government troops are backed by members of Lebanon's Hezbollah, which has been fighting alongside regime forces in their assault on rebel-held territory in the central region.

In addition to its symbolic value, Homs is a geographic lynchpin in Syria. The main highway from Damascus to the north and the coast, a stronghold of President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, runs through Homs.

Also on Sunday, Syria's main exiled opposition group condemned the reported execution of scores of government soldiers by rebels in a northern Syrian village several days ago.

The Syrian National Coalition made up of exiled opposition leaders said in a statement that it was forming a commission of inquiry to investigate the incident in Khan al-Assal.

Syrian activists say rebels killed 150 government soldiers, some after they surrendered, on Monday and Tuesday in the village outside Aleppo, the country's largest city.

The state media said that 123 "civilians and military personnel" were killed in a "massacre" and others were still missing.

"Those involved in such crimes will be held accountable," the Coalition statement said.

The Coalition said initial reports showed "armed groups" not affiliated with the main rebel coalition were involved. It did not elaborate, but the al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra says its fighters participated in the battle.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said the crime "will not pass without punishment," vowing that the perpetrators will pay a "dear price."

In an interview with Syrian TV late Saturday, he said the "massacre" aimed to spread fear and panic among people at a time when the Syrian military was achieving significant progress on the ground.

In a separate statement, the Coalition urged Egypt to release dozens of Syrians it said were arrested last week allegedly for violating residency regulations.

It said Egyptian police arrested at least 72 Syrian men and nine boys at checkpoints on main roads in Cairo. Some had valid visas or residence permits but were arrested "on the pretext of not having residence permits," it said.

The Coalition said regulations concerning Syrians' entrance into Egypt were changed. Since July 8, Syrians have been required to obtain entry visas and security clearance before they are allowed to enter Egypt.

It urged the Egyptian government not to deport Syrians, saying Cairo has an "ethical and humanitarian duty to protect the Syrian people fleeing the tyranny" at home.

NBA Rumors: Latest Buzz on Greg Oden, Brandon Jennings and More

August is just around the corner and, naturally, most of the big-name NBA free agents are off the open market.?However, there's still a handful of intriguing names who have yet to sign an extension or catch on with a club for the upcoming 2013-14 campaign.

Let?s take a look at some of these players and highlight the latest buzz on where they may end up in Saturday?s rumor roundup.

?

Greg Oden Making Decision Soon

Despite not playing in the NBA since Dec. 5 of 2009, there are a number of suitors lining up for Greg Oden?s services this summer.?According to Yahoo! Sports? Marc J. Spears, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft will choose between the Sacramento Kings, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks at some point next week:

This comes on the heels of a positive workout in Indianapolis, in which the big man displayed his agility and ability to complete other basketball-related drills without issue.?Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, Kings GM Pete D?Alessandro and unnamed executives from the Pelicans were in attendance, according to ESPN?s Marc Stein and Jeff Goodman.

After participating in just 82 games during his five-year career, Oden has to make sure that he makes the best decision for his future. There is no guarantee that he will ever truly be healthy, and he is always an injury risk on the floor.

Expect Oden to commit to the team that offers the most guaranteed money and the best chance to revive his career.

Brandon Jennings Demanding Big Contract

The Milwaukee Bucks are trying to ink Brandon Jennings to a contract extension, but they have been unsuccessful in their efforts thus far.

According to Steve Kyler of Hoopsworld, the young point guard is reportedly seeking a massive contract worth something in the range of $11 million to $12 million per year.?The Bucks are refusing to cave at this juncture, but they have expressed the willingness to ink the 23-year-old to a more reasonable $8 million per season deal.

If Jennings can?t reach a deal with Milwaukee, he could accept a qualifying offer worth $4.5 million and take his talents to unrestricted free agency next summer.?Don?t be surprised if that ends up happening, as the two parties seem quite far from an agreement.

Mo Williams Waiting for Right Offer

Despite being a key contributor in the playoffs?as recently as 2012 with the Los Angeles Clippers?Mo Williams can?t find anyone to offer him a long-term contract.?As per Kyler, Williams is weighing his options and hoping that an interested franchise eventually floats along a lucrative multi-year contract.

With the free-agency period nearly a month old, though, that scenario seems extremely unlikely and gets less probable by the day.

Should Williams hold out longer?

    Should Williams hold out longer?

  • Yes, wait for a fair offer.

  • No, take a one-year deal, sign with a contender and try again next year.

Williams may end up having to accept one of the various one-year, low-money deals he has been offered.?One of those is reportedly from the Heat, where the 30-year-old guard could rejoin his old partner from their days with the Cleveland Cavaliers,?LeBron James.

He would be a major asset coming off the Miami pine, as the veteran has great range and could replace some of the shots that the recently amnestied Mike Miller would have taken.

Because there is such little money to go around and just a handful of roster spots left in the league, expect Williams to make his decision soon.?
