Trinidad and Tobago PM ''touched'' by warm reception in India

Jodhpur, Jan 9 : Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar, presently on a state-visit to India, said that she was ''humbled'' and ''inspired'' by the love and warmth given by the country''s people and government during her stay.

Bissessar said this while addressing a gathering of officials from both nations on the sidelines of a cultural programme organised in her honour in Jodhpur.

Reflecting on her visit, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago said she was touched by the warm response given to her in India.

"I must say, we are very humbled by the experiences we have had here. The love, the warmth and the kindness of the people of great Republic of India, has warmed our hearts and inspired us. Your Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his government, their generosity and warmth towards their grandchildren in Trinidad and Tobago has been tremendous," said Bissessar.

Bissessar had arrived in New Delhi on Thursday on a 10-day visit to India with a high-level delegation of business leaders, entrepreneurs and ministers.

Bissessar''s visit is the first by a Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago in nearly 15 years.

During the course of her visit, the two nations have signed five agreements to boost bilateral ties. The pacts broadly envisage greater bilateral cooperation in the fields of culture, business and economic engagements, medicine and education. Trinidad and Tobago has a population of 1.3 million, and over 40 percent of them are of Indian origin and an equal percentage African.

Though India and Trinidad and Tobago have strong historical and cultural links, the volume of bilateral trade remains significantly low as compared to India''s economic engagements with other nations. (ANI)
