Is that bacteria dead yet? Nano and laser technology packed into small device tests antibiotic treatment in minutes

June 30, 2013 ? Researchers at EPFL have built a matchbox-sized device that can test for the presence of bacteria in a couple of minutes, instead of up to several weeks. A nano-lever vibrates in the presence of bacterial activity, while a laser reads the vibration and translates it into an electrical signal that can be easily read -- the absence of a signal signifies the absence of bacteria. Thanks to this method, it is quick and easy to determine if a bacteria has been effectively treated by an antibiotic, a crucial medical tool especially for resistant strains. Easily used in clinics, it could also prove useful for testing chemotherapy treatment.

The research is published in the latest issue of Nature Nanotechnology.

"This method is fast and accurate. And it can be a precious tool for both doctors looking for the right dosage of antibiotics and for researchers to determine which treatments are the most effective," explains Giovanni Dietler.

Laser and nanotechnology read the bacteria's metabolic activity

It currently takes a long time to measure a bacterial infection's response to antibiotic treatment. Clinicians must culture the bacteria and then observe its growth, sometimes for almost a month, as is the case with tuberculosis, in order to determine if the treatment has been effective.

Thanks to advances in laser and optical technology, the EPFL team of physicists has reduced this time to a couple of minutes. To do so, Giovanni Dietler, Sandor Kasas and Giovanni Longo have exploited the microscopic movements of a bacterium's metabolism.

These vital signs are almost unperceivable. In order to test for them, the researchers place the bacteria on an extremely sensitive measuring device that vibrates a small lever -- only slightly thicker than a strand of hair -- in the presence of certain activity. The lever then vibrates under the metabolic activity of the germs. These infinitely small oscillations, on the order of one millionth of a millimeter, determine the presence or absence of the bacteria.

To measure these vibrations, the researchers project a laser onto the lever. The light is then reflected back and the signal is converted into an electrical current to be interpreted by the clinician or researcher. When the electrical current is a flat line, one knows that the bacteria are all dead; it is as easy to read as an electrocardiogram.

A promising method for cancer treatment

The researchers have miniaturized the tool -- it is currently the size of a matchbox. "By joining our tool with a piezoelectric device instead of a laser, we could further reduce its size to the size of a microchip," says Giovanni Dietler. They could then be combined together to test a series of antibiotics on one strain in only a couple of minutes.

The researchers are currently evaluating the tool's potential in other fields, notably oncology. They are looking into measuring the metabolism of tumor cells that have been exposed to cancer treatment to evaluate the efficiency of the treatment. "If our method also works in this field, we really have a precious tool on our hands that can allow us to develop new treatments and also test both quickly and simply how the patient is reacting to the cancer treatment," says Sandor Kasas.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Shea Salinas and Alan Gordon scored in second-half stoppage time to give the short-handed San Jose Earthquakes a 3-2 victory against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night.

Salinas knocked in a loose rebound in the 92nd minute and Gordon scored on a header a minute later to give San Jose (5-7-6) a second comeback victory in two seasons against the Galaxy at Stanford. The Earthquakes came from two goals down to beat LA 4-3 last June 30.

Marcelo Sarvas scored in the 20th minute and Hector Jimenez in the 65th for Los Angeles (7-7-3).

Gordon scored his first goal of the season in the 68th minute to pull San Jose to 2-1. The Earthquakes? chances looked dire after defender Victor Bernardez saw two yellow cards in the space of eight minutes and was sent off in the 77th minute, leaving San Jose down to 10 players.

Obama sees no threat in China rivalry for Africa business

By Jeff Mason and Mark Felsenthal

PRETORIA (Reuters) - The United States does not feel threatened by the growth of trade and investment in Africa by China and other emerging powers, U.S. President Barack Obama said on Saturday.

Suggestions that he has allowed China to steal a march over the United States in doing business with Africa have dogged Obama's three-nation swing through the continent, but he said the increased Chinese engagement was beneficial for all.

"I don't feel threatened by it. I feel it's a good thing," Obama told a news conference during a visit to South Africa.

The more countries invest in Africa, the more the world's least developed continent can be integrated into the global economy, the first African-American U.S. president said.

"I want everybody playing in Africa. The more the merrier."

China has greatly expanded its reach in Africa since the start of the new century. It overtook the United States as Africa's largest trading partner in 2009, a February report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) showed.

China's advantage in trade stems mostly from how much it sells to Africa. Chinese exports to the continent in 2011 were almost triple the level of U.S. exports.

When it comes to investment flows, however, the picture is different. Data for 2007-2011 suggest U.S. foreign investment flows to the region were larger than China's, the GAO said.

"China's role as an investor, aid donor and financier is not outsized," Johns Hopkins University China scholar Deborah Brautigam wrote recently.

"Although Western countries fret about China's growing role in Africa, the United States alone disbursed more official finance to African countries than China did in 2010."

Still, China's influence looms large over the continent, partly because it has been so aggressive in its courtship.

Beijing and Washington should be partners in Africa to foster development and peace, said an official Chinese commentary after Obama's made his remarks.

Obama's stops in South Africa and Tanzania mirror a visit in March by then newly named Chinese President Xi Jinping, which could be seen as rivalry between the two superpowers on the African continent, state-run news agency Xinhua said.

"This mentality belongs to the past. It results from the West's biased perception of China's role in Africa," Xinhua said. "It also misses the bigger picture in which Beijing and Washington, instead of being competitors undermining each other's efforts, can actually work as partners in promoting Africa's development."

RESTING ON ITS LAURELS?

Obama's visit to Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania will bring to four the number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa that the U.S. president has visited in the last four years. He stopped briefly in Ghana in his first term.

In contrast, Chinese presidents and vice presidents have visited 30 African countries over the same period, said Mwangi Kimenyi, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

There is also a sense that the United States may be resting on its laurels.

"There hasn't really been a presence of U.S. companies since 1994, taking advantage of the new opportunities," Haroon Bhorat, a professor at the University of Cape Town said recently, speaking of South Africa.

"So, you've seen new emerging markets entering into other emerging markets like South Africa and taking advantage of economic opportunities in a way where the U.S., already with a foothold, arguably hasn't done enough."

Obama's aides have argued that he has had two wars and a deep economic crisis to deal with since he took office in 2009.

Obama has also said that U.S. interactions with Africa have included goals of social and political development, unlike those of China, which he said were more narrowly focused on commercial benefits.

"A lot of people are pleased that China is involved in Africa," he told reporters travelling with him on Friday.

"On the other hand, they recognize that China's primary interest is being able to obtain access for natural resources in Africa to feed the manufacturers in export-driven policies of the Chinese economy."

That relationship makes Africa an exporter of raw materials but does not create jobs in Africa and is not a sustainable model over the long-term, he added.

In Pretoria on Saturday, Obama urged African nations to be tougher negotiators in accepting investments from abroad.

"You produce the raw materials, sold cheap and then all the way up the chain somebody else is making the money and creating the jobs and the value," he said.

"Make sure that whoever you're dealing with ... you're getting a good deal that's benefiting the people here and that can help to spur on broad-based development."

Buying games set to be a more expensive affair in India

Your wait to get a copy of the soon to be released videogames could soon prove to be a costly affair. Just as global videogame prices have shot up, India will also feel the pinch.

?

MCV India reports that all the games, which will be released after September, would be sold at a higher price than their predecessors. Chris Gatherer, Regional Director for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) markets, EA said, ?We will be launching our pre-orders on Origin soon and I can confirm the pricing will be comparative to global market pricing.? The list of game that will be affected by the price hike includes upcoming popular titles such as FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Watch Dogs. Console versions of the games will now be sold for around $59.99 (Rs 3,570), the current global price, while the PC version of the same can be bought for Rs 1,499.

Watch Dogs to get dearer

?

?

Though it is still unknown if these new prices will be restricted to Origin games alone or if they will also be applicable to the boxed releases in the country, one gets a sense that the rising dollar prices in comparison to the rupee will only add to the eventual price. This could also be one way for publishers to shift the selling strategy for PC games from boxed releases to digital distribution. Gamers could eventually choose the convenience of digitally-distributed games at a similar or the same price as boxed sets.

Online retailer Flipkart has already made changes in the pricing of many of the upcoming games, which include games like Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts. The pre-order price for the PC version of Watch Dogs is Rs 1,499, while Call of Duty: Ghosts is priced at Rs 3,499. The Xbox 360 and the PS3 version of Ghosts is priced at Rs 4,099.

Biochemists identify protease substrates important for bacterial growth and development

June 27, 2013 ? Reporting this month in Molecular Microbiology, Peter Chien and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Amherst describe using a combination of biochemistry and mass spectrometry to "trap" scores of new candidate substrates of the protease ClpXP to reveal how protein degradation is critical to cell cycle progression and bacterial development. The new understanding could lead to identifying new antibiotic targets.

As Chien (pronounced Chen) explains, to carry out fundamental life processes such as growing and dividing, cells must orchestrate, in time and location, the production and degradation of hundreds of protein substrates. Even in simple bacteria, protein degradation is critical for making sure these organisms can grow and respond to their environment properly.

Scientists have known that a group of protein machines called energy-dependent proteases are responsible for the majority of this degradation, but what targets these machines recognize and how they do it has been unknown in many cases.

With the new series of experiments in the model bacteria Caulobacter crescentus in the Chien biochemistry and molecular biology laboratory, much more is now understood, he says. "We first generated a protease mutant that could recognize but not destroy its targets, acting as a 'trap' for protease substrates. After purifying this trap from living cells, we used mass spectrometry to identify proteins that were caught, finding over a hundred new candidate substrates. These targets covered all aspects of bacterial growth, including DNA replication, transcription and cytoskeletal changes."

Next, they focused on one of these new targets in detail, a protein called TacA. Caulobacter grow by making two different cell types every time they divide. TacA is responsible for making sure that one of these cell types forms properly.

"We used biochemistry and highly purified proteins to identify what parts of TacA were important for degradation by the ClpXP protease," Chien says. "We then made mutants of TacA that could not be degraded and found that when we expressed them in bacteria, these cells failed to properly develop into the correct cell types. Because developmental changes are essential for pathogenic bacteria to invade their host, these insights could potentially identify new antibiotic targets."

The work was funded by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health and by UMass Amherst.

Apple Health Info: Crazy Facts About The Fruit

Everyone's heard about an apple a day. As one of the most popular fruits in America, it's easy to get people eating these fiber-rich, crisp and juicy fruits. And that's a good thing for health: A diet rich in apples has been associated with a host of health benefits, including weight loss, improved lung function, lower risk of stroke, cancer and heart disease.

But just because the humble apple is ubiquitous doesn't mean it's without some mystery as well. Read on to learn more about the fruit you've been eating for, well, ever.

Apple Allergies Are Pollen Allergies
When we think about food allergies, we're much more likely to picture peanuts, shellfish or even eggs. But mild apple allergies are not uncommon. Of note, experts believe that it's the birch pollen that's commonly found on the surface of a raw apple that causes a reaction, rather than a compound found inside the fruit.

Apples Are A True Diet Food
The high water and fiber content of apples mean that you'll feel full longer, despite few (about 95) calories in each one. But apples give you an extra, fat-blasting advantage: A compound in the peel called ursolic acid has been shown to help reduce brown fat in mice and, in a separate study, was found to increase calorie burn and reduce obesity risk in mice.

Apples Are Diverse
The apple is the most diverse food plant in the world. According to food journalist and apple expert Rowan Jacobsen, there used to be 16,000 types of apples in the U.S. alone. A current review of USDA data puts the variety diversity at 2,450 types.

The Way We Eat Apples Wastes Almost A Third
As the video above demonstrates, eating an apple in a circular pattern around the core, wastes about 30 percent of the apple's flesh (or between 20 and 30 calories).

2013-06-25-APPLESWATER_original.jpg
Apples Have A Lot Of Air
Unsubstantiated Internet rumor suggests that apples are 25 percent air, but the only study we could find put the figure at closer to 18 percent.

Albanian premier concedes election defeat

TIRANA, Albania (AP) ? Albania's conservative Prime Minister Sali Berisha has conceded election defeat to rival Socialists, taking personal responsibility for the heavy loss and resigning as leader of the center-right Democratic party.

Berisha conceded while addressing party supporters late Wednesday, as Socialist Edi Rama was ahead with 53 percent of votes counted, compared to just 36 percent for the Democrats.

The 68-year-old Berisha has dominated post-communist politics in Albania and had been seeking a third straight term as prime minister in Sunday's general election.

Sam Mendes Still Not Confirmed for Bond 24

Sam Mendes Still Not Confirmed For Bond 24

To be honest, I?m getting so fed up with Sam Mendes? on-again/off-again relationship with Bond 24 that at this point, I think I?d rather just see someone else direct. I mean, one week the guy is saying he?ll do the project, then the next week he?s saying he may not. It?s time to make a decision Sam, we won?t wait forever.

Despite what we heard last month, which was that Mendes would indeed direct, the director has now said that he?s still unsure and hasn?t made a final decision yet.

Speaking with?Hey U Guys?at the premiere of his stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mendes said the following:

?In answer to the question you?re going to ask, I don?t know yet. I?m in discussion over the ?B? word and I won?t make any decision until ['Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'] is open. It?s taken a long time to get this open and this has been my focus.?

Initially, the director had no intention of returning to direct, stating that the thought of returning for another Bond film made him physically ill. And so, the search began for a new director and quite a few appealing candidates were tossed around. But then Mendes said he?d return for not only Bond 24, but Bond 25 as well, and fans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief.

Now though, everything is uncertain again and we?re left wondering who will direct. While I?m not exactly opposed to Mendes coming back, like I said, at this point I think I?d rather them just go with someone else. Sure,?Skyfall?was the most successful Bond film of all time but I?m sure that someone like Christopher Nolan or Nicolas Winding Refn could do just as good a job with?Bond 24, don?t you think?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Juliette Fowler Communities and Ebby Halliday announce new ...

Sabrina Porter, president and CEO of Juliette Fowler Communities listens to Ebby Halliday thank supporters of the nonprofit. (Brandon Wade/Special Contributor)

Juliette Fowler Communities announced a new project of the nonprofit family and senior services organization ? a transitional home for young women aging out of foster care, to be named after Dallas real estate icon Ebby Halliday.

The Ebby House, scheduled to open in late 2014, will be a community designed for women ages 18-22 to learn skills such as hygiene and personal finance as well as career training and education. It will be in a renovated house on Abrams Road in the Lakewood area in the Fowler Communities campus.

?Many young women are not prepared to be out on their own and are unable to do things we expect them to do,? said Sabrina Porter, president and chief executive of Juliette Fowler Communities. ?It?s disheartening, overwhelming and it?s heart breaking,? Porter said referencing several statistics.

Nationally, only 2 percent of youth who age out of foster care earn a bachelor?s degree or higher and about 84 percent become parents within 18 months of leaving care, according to statistics from the Foster Care Alumni of America.

?When I say we?ll be taking care of these young women, what I really mean is equipping them,? Porter said. ?Because they?ll receive mentoring and skills. It?ll be a little bit different than what you?ve seen before.?

Halliday said she took an interest in the issue of women aging out of care as she has helped support organizations that help needy families and children. The home once remodeled will be painted a bright yellow, Halliday?s favorite color, Porter said.

?This is wonderful,? the 102-year-old icon said after the announcement. ?I support this because I know the good that Fowler Communities does.?

She added that she hopes to meet the young women who move into the home one day.

Juliette Fowler Communities was founded in 1892 as a home for women and children, and today operates assisted and independent living programs, nursing care and rehab therapy as well as a foster care program in collaboration with Presbyterian Children?s Home & Services.

The structure for the home is set to be renovated and will cost an estimated $3 million. The nonprofit has raised about $2 million. Additionally, the annual operating cost of the facility will be about $325,000, Porter said. Young women in the program will apply for it and are expected to remain in the home for 18 to 24 months. The goal, Porter said, is not to rely on government assistance to fund the program.

?We want to teach these women to be as independent as possible,? she said.

All-time greatest TV shows and movies are ...

Pop culture

Summer's here! And while many favorite and critically acclaimed shows have ended their seasons (see you next year, Don Draper!), summer blockbusters are starting to show up in theaters and many popular television programs are returning to the airwaves.

Image: "Casablanca," "The Sopranos," "The Simpsons" and "The Godfather Part 2."

Warner Bros. / HBO / FOX / Paramount

"Casablanca," "The Sopranos," "The Simpsons" and "The Godfather Part 2" all made Entertainment Weekly's list of top movies and TV shows ever.

And as the summer entertainment season kicks into gear, Entertainment Weekly is preparing to unveil its list of All Time Greatest TV Shows and Movies Wednesday morning on TODAY.

Gangsters, outlaws, star-crossed lovers and creepy shower killers are among those viewers meet in the magazine's top five films list. And while we?re not revealing which movie is the magazine's No. 1 pick, we can tell you none of the movies that made the top five came along after America?s bicentennial. Think the suave 1940's charm of ?Casablanca,? or "Citizen Kane's" saga of old-school journalism, and the gritty and engrossing tales of mob life in ?The Godfather,? 1972 and ?The Godfather Part 2,? 1974.

In fact, there?s a flurry of bad men ? and one bad woman ? at the top of the list. ?Casablanca? has its Nazis of course, and ?The Godfather? films feature their share of murder and mayhem, horse heads in beds and characters who end up sleeping with the fishes. ?Bonnie and Clyde? came out in 1967 but tells the tale of famed outlaws from 30 years prior. And 1960?s legendary ?Psycho? is dubbed the ?granddaddy of all slasher films,? and it kept some of us out of the shower like ?Jaws? kept us out of the ocean.

On the small screen, only one of the magazine's top five picks for All Time Greatest TV Shows is still on the air. (Seriously, "Breaking Bad," "Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones" didn't crack the summit of the list!) And that still-on-the-air comedy, Fox's very long-running "The Simpsons," is also the only animated program anywhere in the top 70.

The rest of the top five is evenly split with two truth-filled sitcoms featuring stellar comedians ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show," 1970-1977, and "Seinfeld," 1989-1998) and two crime-dramas with complex, not-always-good-guy leads who became TV legends ("The Sopranos," 1999-2007, and "The Wire," 2002-2008).

Tune in to TODAY Wednesday to see how Entertainment Weekly ranked these shows and movies in their All Time Greatest list!

Which movies and TV shows would put in your top 5? Click on "Talk about it" below and give us your list!

Chicken in Teen Diet May Ward Off Colon Cancer

Eating chicken during high school may reduce the risk of a precancerous condition that may develop into colon cancer, a new study finds.

In a study of nearly 20,000 women, those who ate more chicken during their teen years had lower risks of developing colorectal adenomas, which are benign tumors that may progress into colon cancer.

The researchers didn't find a direct relationship between red meat intake and adenomas, but the results showed that replacing one serving per day of red meat with one serving of poultry or fish may reduce the risks of rectal and advanced adenomas by about 40 percent.

"Among different cancers, colorectal cancer is the most influenced by diet," said study researcher Dr. Katharina Nimptsch. "Compared to something like smoking, diet is not a large cancer risk factor, but it does have an impact."

Previous research has found that a diet high in red and processed meat may increase risks of colon cancer. Other risk factors for developing colon cancer include heavy alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, as well as diabetes and a diet rich in fat.

However, previous studies have investigated diet during adulthood, rather than focusing on what people eat earlier in life, and their future cancer risk.

"Colorectal carcinogenesis is a long process that can take several decades, and the initial steps of carcinogenesis may occur at young ages," the researchers wrote in their study.

In the study, 19,771 women ages 34 to 51 answered questions about their diet during high school. Over the following 10 years, 1,494 of the women were diagnosed with colorectal adenomas. Of these adenomas, 305 were in an advanced stage.

"Our findings do not suggest an association between red meat intake during adolescence and colorectal adenomas later in life, but higher poultry intake during this time was associated with a lower risk of colorectal adenomas," the researchers said.

Eating more poultry and fish in adulthood didn't seem to change the risk, according to the study.

The researchers found it surprising that the results didn't show a link between red meat and the risk of adenomas, Nimptsch said. "When you look at the amount of meat people ate, it was really high." However, there were few women in the study who ate very little red meat; perhaps there was not enough variation to see a significant difference in risk, she said.

As with other observational studies, the findings cannot show a cause-and-effect relationship. "Before recommendations are made based on these findings, it is necessary that results are confirmed," Nimptsch said.

The results add to previous evidence that eating poultry may decrease risk of colon cancer. However, what mechanism might underlie the link remains unclear.

The study was published June 19 in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Three planets in habitable zone of nearby star: Gliese 667c reexamined

June 25, 2013 ? A team of astronomers has combined new observations of Gliese 667C with existing data from HARPS at ESO's 3.6-metre telescope in Chile, to reveal a system with at least six planets. A record-breaking three of these planets are super-Earths lying in the zone around the star where liquid water could exist, making them possible candidates for the presence of life. This is the first system found with a fully packed habitable zone.

Gliese 667C is a very well-studied star. Just over one third of the mass of the Sun, it is part of a triple star system known as Gliese 667 (also referred to as GJ 667), 22 light-years away in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion). This is quite close to us -- within the Sun's neighbourhood -- and much closer than the star systems investigated using telescopes such as the planet-hunting Kepler space telescope.

Previous studies of Gliese 667C had found that the star hosts three planets with one of them in the habitable zone. Now, a team of astronomers led by Guillem Anglada-Escud? of the University of G?ttingen, Germany and Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire, UK, has reexamined the system. They have added new HARPS observations, along with data from ESO's Very Large Telescope, the W.M. Keck Observatory and the Magellan Telescopes, to the already existing picture [1]. The team has found evidence for up to seven planets around the star [2].

These planets orbit the third fainter star of a triple star system. Viewed from one of these newly found planets the two other suns would look like a pair of very bright stars visible in the daytime and at night they would provide as much illumination as the full Moon. The new planets completely fill up the habitable zone of Gliese 667C, as there are no more stable orbits in which a planet could exist at the right distance to it.

"We knew that the star had three planets from previous studies, so we wanted to see whether there were any more," says Tuomi. "By adding some new observations and revisiting existing data we were able to confirm these three and confidently reveal several more. Finding three low-mass planets in the star's habitable zone is very exciting!"

Three of these planets are confirmed to be super-Earths -- planets more massive than Earth, but less massive than planets like Uranus or Neptune -- that are within their star's habitable zone, a thin shell around a star in which water may be present in liquid form if conditions are right. This is the first time that three such planets have been spotted orbiting in this zone in the same system [3].

"The number of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy is much greater if we can expect to find several of them around each low-mass star -- instead of looking at ten stars to look for a single potentially habitable planet, we now know we can look at just one star and find several of them," adds co-author Rory Barnes (University of Washington, USA).

Compact systems around Sun-like stars have been found to be abundant in the Milky Way. Around such stars, planets orbiting close to the parent star are very hot and are unlikely to be habitable. But this is not true for cooler and dimmer stars such as Gliese 667C. In this case the habitable zone lies entirely within an orbit the size of Mercury's, much closer in than for our Sun. The Gliese 667C system is the first example of a system where such a low-mass star is seen to host several potentially rocky planets in the habitable zone.

The ESO scientist responsible for HARPS, Gaspare Lo Curto, remarks: "This exciting result was largely made possible by the power of HARPS and its associated software and it also underlines the value of the ESO archive. It is very good to also see several independent research groups exploiting this unique instrument and achieving the ultimate precision."

And Anglada-Escud? concludes: "These new results highlight how valuable it can be to re-analyse data in this way and combine results from different teams on different telescopes."

Notes

[1] The team used data from the UVES spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile (to determine the properties of the star accurately), the Carnegie Planet Finder Spectrograph (PFS) at the 6.5-metre Magellan II Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, the HIRES spectrograph mounted on the Keck 10-metre telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii as well as extensive previous data from HARPS (the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) at ESO's 3.6-metre telescope in Chile (gathered through the M dwarf programme led by X. Bonfils and M. Mayor 2003-2010.

[2] The team looked at radial velocity data of Gliese 667C, a method often used to hunt for exoplanets. They performed a robust Bayesian statistical analysis to spot the signals of the planets. The first five signals are very confident, while the sixth is tentative, and seventh more tentative still. This system consists of three habitable-zone super-Earths, two hot planets further in, and two cooler planets further out. The planets in the habitable zone and those closer to the star are expected to always have the same side facing the star, so that their day and year will be the same lengths, with one side in perpetual sunshine and the other always night.

[3] In the Solar System Venus orbits close to the inner edge of the habitable zone and Mars close to the outer edge. The precise extent of the habitable zone depends on many factors.

Kristen Stewart's 'Camp X-Ray' casts leading man (Exclusive)

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Peyman Moaadi, who starred in the Oscar-winning foreign film "A Separation," is set to star opposite Kristen Stewart in writer-director Peter Sattler's politically-charged indie drama "Camp X-Ray," TheWrap has learned.

Stewart stars as Cole, a young soldier who escapes her suffocating small town by joining the military, only to find that she's been stationed at Guantanamo rather than Iraq, as she had hoped. Met with hatred and abuse from the Muslim men in charge, she forges an odd friendship with Ali (Moaadi), who has been imprisoned at Gitmo for eight years.

"Army Wives" star Joseph Julian Soria will co-star as one of Stewart's closest friends on the base.

Gina Kwon and Sophia Lin are producing, which David Gordon Green is executive producing with Lindsay Williams and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein. Production will begin later this summer in Los Angeles.

Moaadi is an accomplished screenwriter who has penned several famous Iranian films and recently made his directorial debut with the award-winning drama "The Snow on the Pines." He started his acting career in Asghar Farhadi's 2009 film "About Elly" before reuniting with the director on "A Separation."

Moaadi will soon be seen alongside Morgan Freeman in "The Last Knights" and he also worked with James Gandolfini on the HBO pilot "Criminal Justice," which is now in limbo following Gandolfini's death. He's repped by Shelley Browning of Magnolia Entertainment.

Asia shares slide on China worries, Fed outlook; dollar firms

By Chikako Mogi

TOKYO (Reuters) - Chinese shares dragged Asian bourses to a fresh 9-1/2-month low on Monday as investors worried about Beijing's economic and financial stability and markets scrambled to price in the Federal Reserve's plan to slow its stimulus drive later in 2013.

European stocks were seen consolidating after last week's losses, with financial spreadbetters predicting London's FTSE 100, Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX would open little changed.

But a 0.6 percent drop in U.S. stock futures pointed to a weak Wall Street open.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.8 percent to its lowest since early September, after posting its worst week since May 2012 with a drop of 4.5 percent last week. Most of the region's stock indexes are now well into oversold territory.

China bank shares led the downward spiral after official news reports at the weekend suggested Beijing would continue to address the risks of shadow banking, which was behind the central bank's withholding of funds to the money market last week.

The People's Bank of China bank exacerbated nervousness by saying that liquidity in the country's financial system is "reasonable." It has also pledged to "fine tune" existing "prudent" monetary policy.

Hong Kong shares fell 2.4 percent and Shanghai shares plummeted 5.4 percent. The Shanghai financials sub-index was down 7.1 percent, headed for its worst single day loss since November 2008.

"I think the market is expecting 'fine-tuning' to mean a tightening of liquidity moving forward, especially after the way official media talked about shadow financing over the weekend," said Cao Xuefeng, Chengdu-based head of research at Huaxi Securities.

China's volatile money market rates kept investors jittery about the intentions of the Chinese authorities, as the recent spike in market rates compounded fears of a sharper-than-expected slowdown in the world's second-largest economy.

China's weighted average overnight bond repurchase rate, a measure of the cost of funds, eased to 6.64 percent from Friday's close at 8.89 percent. The rate had been around 4 percent for much of 2013 until this month.

"The Chinese authorities are purposefully doing this to let investors be aware of the pain that must accompany the structural reforms the government is trying to pursue, so investors shouldn't be complacent about the government avoiding a hard landing," said Xiao Minjie, an independent economist in Tokyo.

Australian shares tumbled 1.5 percent, dragged by concerns about slowing growth in China, its main export market.

A weaker yen helped buoy Japan's Nikkei stock average in early trade, but the Nikkei surrendered gains and ended down 1.3 percent as investors remained skittish after last week's global market rout and the fresh tumble in Chinese stocks.

"The Chinese market changed the mood completely," said Kyoya Okazawa, head of global equities and commodity derivatives at BNP Paribas in Tokyo. "Global markets have just started pricing in the end of China's high-growth period and investors are backing away from emerging markets."

Going into the Fed's June meeting, investors continued to take money out of emerging-market fund groups in the week ending June 19, EPFR Global said on Friday.

Asian credit markets were also unsettled, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index widening by 20 basis points.

DOLLAR SOLE OUTPERFORMER

The dollar outshone all other asset classes and strengthened broadly, in turn weighing on dollar-based commodities prices, on the prospect of rising yields and an improving U.S. economy which has allowed the Fed to suggest a major policy reversal.

Financial markets sold off last week after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said that with the U.S. economy showing signs of recovery, the central bank may start scaling back its huge monthly bond-buying plan which was aimed at keeping bond yields down and supporting the economy.

The Fed's strong accommodative stance has also encouraged investment in riskier assets such as shares.

The dollar rose 0.6 percent against the yen at 98.48, steadily moving away from its 10-week low of 93.75 yen hit earlier in the month.

Traders said the prospect of diverging yield directions will support the dollar against the yen.

U.S. Treasuries extended last week's dismal performance, with the 10-year yield rising to 2.5928 percent to a near two-year high, after the benchmark yield posted its biggest weekly rise since November 2001 last week.

"A better economic outlook will eventually need to be priced into the short end of the yield curve. This suggests that there is a catch-up trade for the USD versus low-yielding currencies (such as the yen)," Barclays Capital said in a research note.

Against a basket of major currencies, the dollar index rose 0.4 percent to a two-week high after ending last week up 2.2 percent for its biggest weekly gain since early November, 2011.

Spot gold slumped 1.2 percent to $1,281.39 an ounce, approaching its lowest since September 2010 of $1,268.89 touched on Friday.

U.S. crude futures fell 0.4 percent to $93.32 a barrel and Brent shed 0.6 percent to $100.35.

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, believed to be holed up in Hong Kong, has admitted providing information to the news media about two highly classified NSA surveillance programs. It is not known if the U.S. government has made a formal extradition request to Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong government had no immediate reaction to the charges against Snowden. WASHINGTON (AP) ? Edward Snowden, the former government contractor who says he revealed that the National Security Agency collects Americans' phone records and Internet data from U.S. communication companies, now faces charges of espionage and theft of government property.

Snowden is believed to be in Hong Kong, which could complicate efforts to bring him to a U.S. federal court to answer charges that he engaged in unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence information.

In addition to those charges, both brought under the Espionage Act, the government charged Snowden with theft of government property. Each crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Hong Kong was silent Saturday on whether Snowden should be extradited to the United States now that he has been charged, but some of Hong Kong's legislators said the decision should be up to the Chinese government.

The one-page criminal complaint against Snowden was unsealed Friday in federal court in Alexandria, Va., part of the Eastern District of Virginia where his former employer, government contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, is headquartered, in McLean.

The complaint is dated June 14, five days after Snowden's name first surfaced as the person who had leaked to the news media that the NSA, in two highly classified surveillance programs, gathered telephone and Internet records to ferret out terror plots.

It was unclear Friday whether the U.S. had yet to begin an effort to extradite Snowden from Hong Kong. He could contest extradition on grounds of political persecution. In general, the extradition agreement between the U.S. and Hong Kong excepts political offenses from the obligation to turn over a person. Hong Kong could consider the charges under the Espionage Act political crimes.

Hong Kong had no immediate reaction to word of the charges against Snowden.

The Obama administration has now used the Espionage Act in seven criminal cases in an unprecedented effort to stem leaks. In one of them, Army Pfc. Bradley Manning acknowledged he sent more than 700,000 battlefield reports, diplomatic cables and other materials to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. His military trial is underway.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed the charges against Snowden.

"I've always thought this was a treasonous act," he said in a statement. "I hope Hong Kong's government will take him into custody and extradite him to the U.S."

But the Government Accountability Project, a whistle-blower advocacy group, said Snowden should be shielded from prosecution by whistle-blower protection laws.

"He disclosed information about a secret program that he reasonably believed to be illegal, and his actions alone brought about the long-overdue national debate about the proper balance between privacy and civil liberties, on the one hand, and national security on the other," the group said in a statement.

Michael di Pretoro, a retired 30-year veteran with the FBI who served from 1990 to 1994 as the legal liaison officer at the American consulate in Hong Kong, said "relations between U.S. and Hong Kong law enforcement personnel are historically quite good."

"In my time, I felt the degree of cooperation was outstanding to the extent that I almost felt I was in an FBI field office," di Pretoro said.

The U.S. and Hong Kong have a standing agreement on the surrender of fugitives. However, Snowden's appeal rights could drag out any extradition proceeding.

The success or failure of any extradition proceeding depends on what the suspect is charged with under U.S. law and how it corresponds to Hong Kong law under the treaty. In order for Hong Kong officials to honor the extradition request, they have to have some applicable statute under their law that corresponds with a violation of U.S. law.

Hong Kong lawmakers said Saturday that the Chinese government should make the final decision on whether Snowden should be extradited to the United States.

Outspoken legislator Leung Kwok-hung said Beijing should instruct Hong Kong to protect Snowden from extradition before his case gets dragged through the court system.

Leung urged the people of Hong Kong to "take to the streets to protect Snowden."

In Iceland, a business executive said Friday that a private plane was on standby to transport Snowden from Hong Kong to Iceland, although Iceland's government says it has not received an asylum request from Snowden.

Business executive Olafur Vignir Sigurvinsson said he has been in contact with someone representing Snowden and has not spoken to the American himself. Private donations are being collected to pay for the flight, he said.

"There are a number of people that are interested in freedom of speech and recognize the importance of knowing who is spying on us," Sigurvinsson said. "We are people that care about privacy."

Disclosure of the criminal complaint came as President Barack Obama held his first meeting with a privacy and civil liberties board and as his intelligence chief sought ways to help Americans understand more about sweeping government surveillance efforts exposed by Snowden.

The five members of the little-known Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board met with Obama for an hour in the White House Situation Room, questioning the president on the two NSA programs that have stoked controversy.

One program collects billions of U.S. phone records. The second gathers audio, video, email, photographic and Internet search usage of foreign nationals overseas, and probably some Americans in the process, who use major Internet service providers, such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Yahoo.

Why closely related species do not eat the same things

June 21, 2013 ? Closely related species consume the same resources less often than more remotely related species. In fact, it is the competition for resources, and not their kinship, which determines the food sources of the species of a community. Under the effect of this competition, closely related species have specialized on different food resources. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by researchers from CNRS, the Mus?um National d'Histoire Naturelle and Exeter University (United Kingdom). These results were obtained by studying trophic interactions between species at an extraordinary level of detail in an English meadow.

Published on 20 June 2013 in the journal Current Biology, the work provides important insights into the evolution of ecological communities at a time when certain are being disrupted by climate change and the arrival of invasive species.

In ecology, the present paradigm considers that kinship relations between species determine the identity of the partners with which the species interact: the more closely related the species, the more chance they have of interacting with the same partners. Thus, according to this view, two closely related species should share the same predators and the same preys. Recent work carried out by a team of researchers from CNRS, the Mus?um National d'Histoire Naturelle and Exeter University shows that this is not necessarily the case. For the first time, the scientists have shown that although kinship between species effectively determines what feeds on species, it is competition for resources and not degree of kinship that determines what species feed on.

To arrive at this conclusion, they made a series of observations over a ten-year period in a meadow in the south east of England. These observations, carried out at an extraordinary level of detail, made it possible to establish the interactions between one hundred or so species situated on four trophic levels: plants (23 species), aphids that feed on these plants (25 species), wasps that lay their eggs in the bodies of the aphids (22 species), and other wasps that lay their eggs in the larvae of the preceding wasps inside aphids (26 species).

The researchers have shown that two closely related species of aphid, for example, are generally the prey of the same species of wasp. It is thus the kinship of species that determines the identity of their predators. On the other hand, these two closely related species of aphid do not necessarily feed on the same plants. Going up the food chain, the scientists observed that there was little chance that the most closely related wasps feed on the same species of aphid. This is explained by the fact that under the pressure of competition for food sources, closely related species diversify what they feed on, which has the effect of reducing competition. It was possible to reach this conclusion thanks to the level of detail of the observations made, enabling dynamics to be revealed at a very local scale.

At a time when global warming is creating an imbalance in communities and when numerous species are invading ecosystems to which they were previously alien, these conclusions need to be taken into account if it is wished to predict the new interactions that will result from such changes. In fact, these results show that the resources consumed by a species joining a community cannot be predicted by its kinship relations with those species already present.

PST: Wambach's legacy tied to Morgan, Hamm

HARRISON, N.J. ? The mark of many great goal scorers is the ability to be selfish in front of the goal.

Three of the best United States forwards ever must have missed that memo.

On Thursday at Red Bull Arena, Abby Wambach smashed Mia Hamm?s international goal scoring record. Wambach entered the game needing two goals to tie the record of 158 goals; she had those within 19 minutes. By halftime she was alone at the top and two clear with 160 goals.

Wambach now owns the greatest individual record in all of soccer ? men?s or women?s. She said she would celebrate her record with family and friends on Thursday night, but the significance of Hamm?s name ? one synonymous with women?s soccer to this day ? bumping down to second on the charts isn?t lost on Wambach.

?If I were to end my career right now, I would have done it before breaking (the record),? Wambach said. ?That?s how much respect I have for Mia ? how much she?s done for me personally, how much she?s doing even for Alex Morgan, still. This is a personal thing. Mia wants players to break her records. I now want Alex to break mine and I just told Alex, ?you better do it in much less time than I did.??

Such is the relationship of three of the most prolific scorers in the history of soccer. Wambach and Hamm are atop the charts, while Morgan?s 44 goals in 68 caps (and at 24 years old) has her on a blistering pace to join the fray. But their ambitions always lie in seeing their apprentice succeed them. Hamm did it for Wambach, guiding the 5-foot-11-inch forward through her early professional years with the U.S. and the Washington Freedom and shaping Wambach?s raw talent into a more determined, more focused player.

[MORE: Wambach breaks Hamm's mark with four-goal night]

?I?m just glad I got to share 158 with her. It was short, but it was fun,? Hamm said humbly in a statement issued through U.S. Soccer.

That?s it. No grievances. No ego. That?s Hamm?s nature. It?s Wambach?s too, and now she plays role model to Morgan. Their goals are to create each others goals.

Just as Hamm and Wambach became a dynamic duo in the three-plus years they played together in the early 2000?s, Wambach and Morgan have become inseparable on the field. Morgan?s assist on Wambach?s fourth goal Thursday was her 13th on a Wambach goal (Hamm assisted 14).

[MORE: Wambach praises teammates in reaching milestone]

But the connection goes well beyond pinging crosses to each other. Find Abby Wambach in warm-ups and you?ll find Alex Morgan. Passing together. Stretching together. Even sitting next to each other on the bench after being taken out of the match (a 5-0 rout) early in the second half.

It?s a connection that breeds sustainable success as the U.S. ushers in the next generation.

Postgame on Thursday, Morgan was beaming as if she just scored goal No. 160.

?I?ve looked up to Abby for so many years,? Morgan said. ?She?s a great leader for this team, and to be able to be a part of this memory looking forward and breaking this record, Abby completely deserves it and I?m really happy for her.?

The relationship is triangular. Hamm helped Morgan train in the offseason to sharpen her skills through the dormant winter. Wambach said she was likely to speak with Hamm following Thursday night?s interviews.

Three greats at what can be the most selfish position in soccer, as unselfish as they come when it comes to each other. That they emerged for the United States in succession without any lapse in between is an unprecedented gift from the soccer gods. Greatness followed greatness, and Morgan is well ready to take the torch and sprint away with it.

?Alex is going to score tons of goals in the next few years,? Wambach said. ?I think we have such a different kind of strength. When I?m having a great game, she?s probably going to be on the assisting end of things. But I want to be putting her in the positions to score goals, because my legs can?t move like hers. She can score goals in such random positions, like the Canada game.

?She?s going to be a threat for us. She?s going to be scoring the lion share of goals for our team over the next couple years, so if my role becomes assister, great. If I?m the set piece threat, fine. Whatever my role is to help this team win a World Cup title, that?s all I care about.?

That elusive World Cup ? the only thing Hamm, and now Wambach, ever really cared about. Hamm won two.

Wambach gave Hamm the retirement gift of an Olympic gold medal. The best thank you Morgan could ever give Wambach is a World Cup trophy in 2015.

France, Italy pile on privacy, data pressure on Google; fines likely

France's data protection agency has ordered Google to change its consolidated privacy policy, more than a year after the company merged 60 individual policies into one single document.?

In a press release issued Thursday,?the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertes (CNIL) said that following a year-long investigation, Google's data collection policies are in breach of French data protection and privacy laws.?

It comes more than half a year after European data protection and privacy regulators warned the search engine that its new privacy policy?shows legal "irregularities"?and may not be "in compliance" with European law.

Two of the biggest gripes the French have with Google's privacy policy practice is the "potentially unlimited combination of users' data" and the lack of definition for retention periods "that do not exceed the period necessary for the purposes for which they are collected."

Meanwhile, Italy's privacy watchdog asked Google for more information on how it treats user data,?according to Reuters, shortly after the French watchdog's statement, sending a clear signal from two significant European economies.

The Italian authorities will evaluate a possible violation of data rules as it mulls over implementing similar financial sanctions.

Google said last year the privacy policy merger would make its products better, enhance the experience for users, while making advertisements more targeted allowing more specific and relevant ads for users. Privacy activists warned that it would be easier for Google and its advertisers to determine who was who, despite the anonymization, and warned of profiling.

Should the search giant fail to comply after the imposed three-month deadline, Google will face a fine of up to ?150,000 ($198,000) and a second fine of up to ?300,000 ($397,000) if the company fails to act.

But other data protection regulators around Europe, including the U.K. (which?can serve a maximum ?500,000 ($758,000) fine against a company), the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Spain are mulling over similar actions, the CNIL said.

Financial reprimands may not be enough for Google to change its mind. The two fines combined remains small change to Google. France's two fines alone would take the company less than 15 minutes to regenerate in revenue.

The search company continues to state that its privacy policy respects European law.

"The Avengers," made by Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios, became the third highest-grossing film of all time, with $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

Downey is expected to be joined by Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson in reprising their superhero roles for "The Avengers 2."

"The Avengers 2," set for release on May 1, 2015, will be directed by Joss Whedon. Marvel said the film would reunite the superheroes from the first film, as well as introducing Marvel characters never seen in film before.

The three "Iron Man" films starring Downey from 2008 to 2013, have grossed more than $2.4 billion at the worldwide box office.

"Iron Man 3" released last month has become the highest-grossing film of the year, with $1.2 billion in global ticket sales, and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, Marvel said in a statement.
