Al Mal GTM launches the Egypt Energy and Economy Conference ...

"Egypt can become a power house for both the southern and northern Mediterranean, we have known this for decades, but instead of pouncing on the opportunity, we are today struggling to keep our homes lit and our factories working," said Ashraf Mohamed Naguib, Managing Director of AL MAL GTM.

The EEEC will host top experts from the private sector, government, and academia to share their thoughts on ideal Energy policy recommendations and requirements for swift structural reforms to the sector.

"It is vital that we start moving from the "Talking Phase" onto the "Action Phase", said Nancy Maghrabi, Managing Director at AL MAL GTM.

"Egypt is at a critical crossroads when it comes to energy resources, and regardless of the reasons which got us to this point, there has to be a reaction not only by the government but by every facet of society."

Increasingly, cities, towns and villages have been subjected to continuous power outages, lines are growing longer at gas stations, and oil tankers are being diverted from Egyptian ports to other destinations due to the lack of financial capabilities of the Egyptian Government to purchase fuel.

"We [Egypt} talk about a vision...that is simply not enough; we have to think beyond the vision, and go into the details of implementation for the coming phase. Major sector structural reforms need to be implemented for conventional energy and a serious change of attitude towards renewable energy development has to be made if we are to survive into the future," said Dr. Tamer Abubakr, Chairman Mashreq Petroleum and Head of the Energy Committee at the Egyptian Federation of Industries.

Egypt continues an arduous struggle towards Energy Subsidies Reform, trying desperately to strike a balance between the social impacts of subsidies removal and trying to curb an explosive budget deficit on one hand and a lack of foreign currency on the other.

"At the EEEC we plan to get into more details regarding the removal of energy subsidies. It is important that we understand that Energy Subsidies cannot be generalized, but the issue needs to be properly dissected and segmented, differentiating between urban communities, light industries, heavy industries, services transportation and agriculture. We have to approach each of the above with a unique and specific policy in order to minimize any possible negative impact of subsidy removal," said Naguib.

Renewable and Alternative energy will be on the top of the agenda at the 2013 EEEC, covering solar, wind, nuclear, and bio fuels as experts from the field converge on the EEEC to offer their ideas, recommendations, and projects, while presenting the challenges the sector faces especially the private sector.

The EEEC will also feature a presentation by Dr. Hosam Gamil Director of Educational Programs for Renewable Energies & Environment German Academy for Renewable Energy and Environmental Technology, emphasizing the imperative role of education and training in the renewable energy sector.

The German Academy for Renewable Energy and Environmental Technology's main mission is to train students and professionals to deepen their knowledge of renewable energies and eco-friendly technologies and to become experts in the field.

"Education has predominantly been an issue of concern in Egypt for decades now, and we as entrepreneurs in the renewable energy market in Egypt know that we will not see any progress in this field without having the right human resources and capabilities to support development. Training will be key for success."

Said Mr. Marco, Founder & General Manager Frienergy who will also be speaking at one of the EEEC sessions.

The EEEC promises to be a "show of force" by the advocates of energy reform in Egypt seeking opportunities for the private sector and demanding assertiveness from the government.
"We pay our taxes; we pay our bills [electrical], and in return we see nothing from the government except for false promises, lack of vision and no clear plan for real reform. The Egyptian Government is literally "shooting in the darkness"; a "darkness" they are fully responsible for and which we can no longer tolerate" added Naguib.
