WikiLeaks On Bradley Manning Verdict: 'Extremism From The Obama Administration'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange branded Pfc. Bradley Manning's espionage conviction Tuesday an episode of "national security extremism" while other supporters expressed relief that he was acquitted of the most serious charge. Among Manning's critics, House intelligence officials said justice was served.

From the courtroom to world capitals, people absorbed the meaning of a verdict that cleared the soldier of a charge of aiding the enemy, which would have carried a potential life sentence, but convicted him on other counts that, together, could also mean a life behind bars. Manning faces up to 136 years in prison if given maximum penalties in a sentencing hearing that starts Wednesday.

In Washington, the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Intelligence Committee joined in a statement declaring "justice has been served today."

"Manning harmed our national security, violated the public's trust, and now stands convicted of multiple serious crimes," said Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, chairman of the House Intelligence committee, and Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the panel's top Democrat.

Assange, whose website served as the conduit for exposing Manning's spilled U.S. secrets to the world, saw nothing to cheer in the mixed verdict.

"It is a dangerous precedent and an example of national security extremism," he told reporters at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, which is sheltering him. "This has never been a fair trial."

Glenn Greenwald, the journalist, commentator and former civil rights lawyer who first reported Edward Snowden's leaks of National Security Agency surveillance programs, said Manning's acquittal on the charge of aiding the enemy represented a "tiny sliver of justice."

And Christian Stroebele, a German lawmaker for the opposition Green Party, tweeted: "Manning has won respect by uncovering the U.S.'s murderous warfare in Iraq."

But the advocacy group Reporters Without Borders said the verdict is a chilling warning to whistleblowers, "against whom the Obama administration has been waging an unprecedented offensive," and threatens the future of investigative journalism because intimidated sources might fall quiet.

Another advocate of less government secrecy, Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists, questioned whether the implications will be so dire, given the extraordinary nature of the Manning case.

"This was a massive hemorrhage of government records, and it's not too surprising that it elicited a strong reaction from the government," Aftergood said.

"Does that mean that every leak from every journalist is likely to do the same?" he asked. "No it doesn't. Most journalists are not in the business of publishing classified documents, they're in the business of reporting the news, which is not the same thing. This is not good news for journalism, but it's not the end of the world, either."

Outside the courtroom, Manning supporters gave his lawyer, David Coombs, a round of applause and shouted "thank you." But they also pressed him on what the verdict meant for the soldier's fate.

"Today is a good day," Coombs said, "but Bradley is by no means out of the fire."

Manning acknowledged giving WikiLeaks more than 700,000 battlefield reports and diplomatic cables, and video of a 2007 U.S. helicopter attack that killed civilians in Iraq, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver. He said during a pretrial hearing he leaked the material to expose U.S military "bloodlust" and diplomatic deceitfulness but did not believe his actions would harm the country.

His defense portrayed him as a naive but well-intentioned figure. Prosecutors branded him an anarchist and traitor.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, welcomed the outcome.

"Bradley Manning endangered the security of the United States and the lives of his own comrades in uniform when he intentionally disclosed vast amounts of classified data," he said. "His conviction should stand as an example to those who are tempted to violate a sacred public trust in pursuit of notoriety, fame, or their own political agenda."

Many supporters in and outside the courtroom wore black T-shirts with "truth" on them to show they consider him a whistleblower just trying to expose government misconduct.

"The government's priorities are upside down," Widney Brown, senior director of international law and policy for Amnesty International, said at the scene.

Officials have "refused to investigate credible allegations of torture and other crimes under international law despite overwhelming evidence," Brown said, but "decided to prosecute Manning, who it seems was trying to do the right thing ? reveal credible evidence of unlawful behavior by the government."

"It seems clear that the government was seeking to intimidate anyone who might consider revealing valuable information in the future," said Ben Wizner of the ACLU Speech, Privacy & Technology Project.

Overseas, Anatoly Kucherena, the Russian lawyer who's been working with Snowden, merely said: "All cases are individual. We shouldn't take the Manning case and compare it to Snowden."

Tour This Tech Innovation Hub in the Middle of Africa

LUSAKA, Zambia ? In early 2011 Google team members visited the University of Zambia to encourage students to participate in the Africa Android Competition. When one student asked the Google presenters what Android was ? and only three people in the room knew the answer ? a light bulb went off in Simunza Muyangana's head.

"I remember leaving there thinking, 'Wow, how do we correct this?'" he told Mashable two years later.

Together with Lukonga Lindunda and Silumesii Maboshe, Muyangaga began organizing technology skills workshops, such as a weekend Ruby on Rails crash course, a session on how to set up a server and a two-week workshop on developing for Android led by an out-of-town instructor.

As these meetups gained popularity, the trio decided to formally name the group BongoHive (meaning "collective of brains," derived from the local Bemba word "bongo" for brain or head).

After receiving one year of funding from the Indigo Trust and Google for Entrepreneurs, BongoHive opened its first physical home in November 2012, nestled in a house on a quiet, tree-lined street, just blocks behind one of Lusaka's busiest shopping malls. The residential home-turned-innovation-hub is hardly distinguishable from the other single-family units it's surrounded by ? save the boldly painted logo on its entryway.

BongoHive, Muyangaga explains, is both the name of the community and the physical location where the community meets. The co-working space offers entrepreneurs free Internet and serves as a pre-incubator for fledging companies looking to learn the basics of accounting, market research and running a business. The founders plan to launch a paid consulting service in the coming months, which will advise companies navigating the digital world.

The community now numbers around 800 people, counting those who "like" BongoHive on Facebook, receive its newsletter and attend its different groups and classes. While the vibrant tech community in Zambia may seem isolated, it's part of a network called AfriLabs, which consists of similar institutions in countries like Kenya, Cameroon and Uganda.

"Since we're the first ones to start these hubs in our own countries, it's where we can exchange notes, help define some things and learn what to avoid from other people's mistakes," Muyangaga says.

Next month BongoHive plans to launch an entrepreneur mentorship program that will match its community with online mentors, who can offer advice via email from outside the Lusaka community.

"We are more likely to learn from Kenya than we are from South Africa, because South Africa has a much larger middle class," Muyangaga says. "When South Africa says, 'We've got this great app that's a copy of one from Silicon Valley,' we say, 'That's great, but it won't fly in Zambia because it's a totally different market and it's not likely to work here.'"

Muyangaga said one of his mantras came out of a widely circulated discussion of dead aid following TED Africa in 2007, in which Jennifer Brea wrote, "Many of Africa's best and brightest become bureaucrats or NGO workers when they should be scientists or entrepreneurs."

Given the economic history of a country like Zambia, which has spent much of its recent history in severe debt, Muyangaga says he understands why many of his countrymen seek security in their careers. However, he believes entrepreneurship will be the fix.

"Zambia has a large unemployment base, poor college and high school graduation rates, and an increasing youth population that cannot find jobs. I don't think the government will sort that out soon," Muyangaga says. "I lean towards the idea that encouraging people to start small businesses is going to sort out this problem quicker than if large corporations come in. If you've got a certain amount of passion for technology and look at problems in a way you that you weren't taught in school, you should venture into your own enterprise, and the worst that you can say is you tried."

Manufacturing drop shows weakness in Japan economy

(AP) ? Japan's industrial output fell in June for the first time in five months, the government said Tuesday as it released data highlighting the fragility of the recovery in the world's No. 3 economy.

Manufacturing slipped 3.3 percent from the month before in June and was 4.8 percent lower than a year before, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said.

Such indicators suggest weaker growth in China may be sapping some of the momentum from the recovery.

However, other data showed the jobless rate edging to 3.9 percent, its lowest level since October 2008, when the economy was slammed by the global financial crisis. The jobless rate had remained at 4.1 percent during the previous few months.

The most recent data have officials questioning whether the government should go ahead with a promised sales tax increase that economists say could derail progress in restoring growth and breaking free of deflation.

The central bank governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, said Monday he believes the recovery is strong enough to weather a tax hike, which is needed to help redress ballooning deficits that have taken Japan's national debt to record high levels.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has claimed progress with his "Abenomics" strategy of fighting deflation with aggressive monetary easing and strong government spending. But he has indicated he may consider amending the plan for a 3 percent increase, to 8 percent, next April.

Figures released earlier showed consumer prices rising 0.4 percent in June, but core inflation which excludes food and energy prices remained negative. Costs for food and energy have largely been pushed higher by the sharp weakening of the Japanese yen, which drives up costs for imported food and energy in this resource-scarce nation.

Prices for desktop computers, imported ground meat and canned fish rose, along with electricity and gas rates. The rise in food prices extends across many categories, from jam to chicken powder, bread to salad dressing.

But prices for many other consumer goods, such as DVD players and digital cameras, have continued to fall.

Fresh from a victory for his Liberal Democratic Party in upper house parliamentary elections, Abe has acknowledged that despite signs of improvement, many Japanese have yet to feel a boost from his policies. He has vowed to press ahead with deeper and more fundamental economic reforms intended to help restore Japan's competitiveness.

A key factor will be whether companies begin to invest more and raise wages, to help drive a recovery in consumer demand that accounts for most of Japan's economic growth.

While sales are up by double digits at Tokyo's toniest department stores, overall retail sales fell in June from the month before, with surveys showing consumer spending is slowing, Marcel Thieliant, an economist for Capital Economics, said in a report Monday.

"Looking ahead, there are a number of reasons to doubt that the recent strong run of consumer spending can continue," he said, noting that a 70 trillion yen ($716 billion) increase in household wealth due to the stock price rally earlier in the year accounts for only a small part of overall household wealth.

"With inflation now rising, income growth has to pick up as well for households to maintain their spending power," he said. "The overwhelming majority of households views inflation as negative, and may rein in spending in response."

Maximizing Results Through Internet Marketing

Internet marketing is essential for getting your business out there online. If you have not started using it, you definitely should. You will be able to know the basics of internet marketing, and you will be able to develop your own strategies after reading this guide.

Site wide links are links that are found on all of your website?s pages. Quite often, site-wide links are featured on the very bottom of a page?s design. If you have a page on your site that you would like everyone to view, you should implement site wide links. The site-wide links will be visible for them at the bottom of the page. It?s also possible to arrange links in a menu that provides a static way to navigate the entire site easily. An organized menu with descriptions for each link is most effective.

While your meta tags are not visible to your website visitors, they are very important for the search engine spiders because they help search engines find your website and determine the content. Your most important meta tags are the ones that you use first, and they should always be relevant to the content of your website. You will need to use meta tags strategically, but do not go overboard. Before placing any keywords, do research on which ones are popular now within your industry and choose those relevant to your target audience.

HTML tags give the text within a certain attribute (bold, italic, etc.). The more significant a certain piece of text is, the more likely it is that an experienced webmaster will put it in bold. Bold tagging is placed on titles that are meaningful and important within the text. Make sure your main title has the tag, and that you use sub-lines for each separate section of the text. If you do this, your website will be easier to understand, and search engine optimization will be increased. Using keywords in your titles helps identify what the important content of your webpage is.

ubranka do chrztu w tanim sklepie internetowym. Try to come up with new ways to promote your site on the Internet. Even though many webmasters use SEO and other marketing methods that are sure to work, you may also want to consider things like internet marketing. It is common for internet content, such as videos and websites, to go viral since the web is mostly driven by dedicated followers. This is basically word-of-mouth marketing on steroids. Word about the item spreads like wildfire across the internet. When content goes viral, it enjoys a brief, but intense surge of popularity, which can give your website traffic a great boost. If you develop unique and amusing content, you never know what good things could happen. You can also conduct research on things that have gone viral in the past, and try to identify what made those things so popular.

When it comes to internet marketing, these are just a couple of great beginner ideas to get you started. When you get the hang of it, you can add more ways to market your business online.

Syrian troops consolidating gains in key district in central Homs region

Syrian government forces backed by Lebanese Hezbollah militants were consolidating their control over a key rebel district in central Syria Sunday, activists said.

The military moves came a day after they expelled rebels from a 13th century landmark mosque they controlled for more than a year.

State-run Syrian TV broadcast live coverage from Khaldiyeh, an embattled northern neighborhood in Homs, where the army has been advancing. Video showed extensive destruction. Activists said most of the buildings in the mainly residential district were no longer fit to live in.

Elsewhere, an opposition group said the death toll from nearly two weeks of clashes between al-Qaida-linked fighters and Kurdish militiamen in northeastern Syria stands at 120. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the dead include 79 fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Jabhat al-Nusra, both al-Qaida-affiliated rebel groups. The group monitors the Syrian war through a network of activists on the ground,

This latest round of fighting flared in Ras al-Ayn on July 6 in the predominantly Kurdish Hassakeh province in the north, near the Turkish border. Kurdish gunmen are fighting to expel the militants, whom they see as a threat.

After capturing the strategic town of Qusair near the Lebanon border last month, government troops launched an offensive on rebel-held areas in Homs, Syria's third largest city, late in June. They have been pushing into Khaldiyeh and other neighborhoods in the Old City that have been under opposition control since 2011.

An unidentified Syrian army commander standing before a destroyed building in Khaldiyeh told an embedded state TV reporter that the military expected to "liberate" the last part of Khaldiyeh within the next two days.

Syrian government forces captured the ancient Khalid Ibn al-Walid Mosque in Khaldiyeh on Saturday. Syrian TV aired a report with video from inside the mosque, showing heavy damage. The video showed debris strewn on the floor and a portion of the mosque appeared to have been burned.

The mosque, famous for its nine domes and two minarets, has been a symbol for rebels in the city that is known as "the capital of the revolution." On Monday, government troops shelled the mosque, damaging the tomb of Ibn al-Walid, a revered figure in Islam. Video showed the tomb's roof knocked down.

The Observatory and other activists said government troops are backed by members of Lebanon's Hezbollah, which has been fighting alongside regime forces in their assault on rebel-held territory in the central region.

In addition to its symbolic value, Homs is a geographic lynchpin in Syria. The main highway from Damascus to the north and the coast, a stronghold of President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, runs through Homs.

Also on Sunday, Syria's main exiled opposition group condemned the reported execution of scores of government soldiers by rebels in a northern Syrian village several days ago.

The Syrian National Coalition made up of exiled opposition leaders said in a statement that it was forming a commission of inquiry to investigate the incident in Khan al-Assal.

Syrian activists say rebels killed 150 government soldiers, some after they surrendered, on Monday and Tuesday in the village outside Aleppo, the country's largest city.

The state media said that 123 "civilians and military personnel" were killed in a "massacre" and others were still missing.

"Those involved in such crimes will be held accountable," the Coalition statement said.

The Coalition said initial reports showed "armed groups" not affiliated with the main rebel coalition were involved. It did not elaborate, but the al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra says its fighters participated in the battle.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said the crime "will not pass without punishment," vowing that the perpetrators will pay a "dear price."

In an interview with Syrian TV late Saturday, he said the "massacre" aimed to spread fear and panic among people at a time when the Syrian military was achieving significant progress on the ground.

In a separate statement, the Coalition urged Egypt to release dozens of Syrians it said were arrested last week allegedly for violating residency regulations.

It said Egyptian police arrested at least 72 Syrian men and nine boys at checkpoints on main roads in Cairo. Some had valid visas or residence permits but were arrested "on the pretext of not having residence permits," it said.

The Coalition said regulations concerning Syrians' entrance into Egypt were changed. Since July 8, Syrians have been required to obtain entry visas and security clearance before they are allowed to enter Egypt.

It urged the Egyptian government not to deport Syrians, saying Cairo has an "ethical and humanitarian duty to protect the Syrian people fleeing the tyranny" at home.

NBA Rumors: Latest Buzz on Greg Oden, Brandon Jennings and More

August is just around the corner and, naturally, most of the big-name NBA free agents are off the open market.?However, there's still a handful of intriguing names who have yet to sign an extension or catch on with a club for the upcoming 2013-14 campaign.

Let?s take a look at some of these players and highlight the latest buzz on where they may end up in Saturday?s rumor roundup.

?

Greg Oden Making Decision Soon

Despite not playing in the NBA since Dec. 5 of 2009, there are a number of suitors lining up for Greg Oden?s services this summer.?According to Yahoo! Sports? Marc J. Spears, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft will choose between the Sacramento Kings, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks at some point next week:

This comes on the heels of a positive workout in Indianapolis, in which the big man displayed his agility and ability to complete other basketball-related drills without issue.?Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, Kings GM Pete D?Alessandro and unnamed executives from the Pelicans were in attendance, according to ESPN?s Marc Stein and Jeff Goodman.

After participating in just 82 games during his five-year career, Oden has to make sure that he makes the best decision for his future. There is no guarantee that he will ever truly be healthy, and he is always an injury risk on the floor.

Expect Oden to commit to the team that offers the most guaranteed money and the best chance to revive his career.

?

Brandon Jennings Demanding Big Contract

The Milwaukee Bucks are trying to ink Brandon Jennings to a contract extension, but they have been unsuccessful in their efforts thus far.

According to Steve Kyler of Hoopsworld, the young point guard is reportedly seeking a massive contract worth something in the range of $11 million to $12 million per year.?The Bucks are refusing to cave at this juncture, but they have expressed the willingness to ink the 23-year-old to a more reasonable $8 million per season deal.

If Jennings can?t reach a deal with Milwaukee, he could accept a qualifying offer worth $4.5 million and take his talents to unrestricted free agency next summer.?Don?t be surprised if that ends up happening, as the two parties seem quite far from an agreement.

?

Mo Williams Waiting for Right Offer

Despite being a key contributor in the playoffs?as recently as 2012 with the Los Angeles Clippers?Mo Williams can?t find anyone to offer him a long-term contract.?As per Kyler, Williams is weighing his options and hoping that an interested franchise eventually floats along a lucrative multi-year contract.

With the free-agency period nearly a month old, though, that scenario seems extremely unlikely and gets less probable by the day.

Should Williams hold out longer?

    Should Williams hold out longer?

  • Yes, wait for a fair offer.

  • No, take a one-year deal, sign with a contender and try again next year.

Williams may end up having to accept one of the various one-year, low-money deals he has been offered.?One of those is reportedly from the Heat, where the 30-year-old guard could rejoin his old partner from their days with the Cleveland Cavaliers,?LeBron James.

He would be a major asset coming off the Miami pine, as the veteran has great range and could replace some of the shots that the recently amnestied Mike Miller would have taken.

Because there is such little money to go around and just a handful of roster spots left in the league, expect Williams to make his decision soon.?

Israel Stiffs EU in Response to Boycott

In response to the EU directive that forbid its members from cooperating, giving money, scholarships, or research grants to organizations in Judea and Samaria, eastern Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon ordered that any request from the European Union regarding Judea, Samaria, and Gaza be turned down.

A spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Maja Kocijancic, responded to Yaalon by saying, "The EU is concerned by reports in the Israeli media that the Israeli Minister of Defense has announced a number of restrictions affecting EU activities supporting the Palestinian people.?

She said, "We have not received any official communication from the Israeli authorities. Our delegations on the spot are seeking urgent clarifications.?

Just in the last week, several funding projects the EU wanted to implement in the Palestinian Authority have been nixed by Israel as well as eight requests by EU officials to travel into PA-assigned areas.

If we want to be able to look ourselves in the mirror in the morning with any state that we need to support for geopolitical reasons, our goal should be to have at least two viable pro-democracy forces that can rotate in and out of power. Even for those who are Morsi fans of his commitment to democracy, what's the 2nd viable force? In the military scenario, what are the two viable forces because in no sane world does that include the military itself. 36 minutes ago ? id="loggedin"> id="notloggedin"> Like (0) Like (0)

This is yet another area in which there is no discernable difference between the Dems and the GOP. That's not a good thing for either the country or the future of the GOP. Well, if the GOP even has a future, which is something I doubt more and more with each passing day. Spengler talks about cultures becoming suicidal in the linked article; so can political parties. 1 hour ago ? id="loggedin"> id="notloggedin"> Like (0) Like (0)

NOLA.com New Orleans Saints' Jimmy Graham deserves to be highest paid tight end in NFL

Jimmy Graham's contract has been a non-story this summer. And that's a huge credit to Jimmy Graham.

The Saints' star tight end could have made a strong case for holding out of training camp and demanding a new contract. He's scheduled to make $1.323 million in the final year of his rookie deal, when his market value is probably closer to $10 million per year.

But Graham said that's just not his way -- which, ironically, is one of many things about him that makes him worth that kind of money.

"You know, it's to each his own," Graham said when asked about other NFL players who choose to hold out in similar situations. "I'm the type of player that it's just about football for me.

"You know, I just want to play, man. It's as simple as that."

Later, Graham added, "All I know is after the season we had last year, and now that we're back, I just want to be a part of it. So I'm gonna be here and I'm gonna play with everything I have no matter what."

Good for Graham, and good for his agent Jimmy Sexton, for not forcing the looming contract standoff to become a distraction this summer while the Saints are reveling in their return to normalcy.

Naturally, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Thursday night that he is "absolutely" pleased with how Graham has approached his contract situation so far.

In a perfect world, all these good vibes would continue with the Saints and Graham agreeing to a new megadeal long before the contract talks start to get contentious around next February or March, when a debate over the franchise tag could come into play.

But if we didn't know it already, we certainly learned with quarterback Drew Brees' deal last summer that no player is immune from a good old-fashioned contract standoff.

And Graham's deal could be even more complicated since his market value is harder to gauge as the best of a new breed of dynamic receiving tight ends.

Graham deserves to become the richest tight end in NFL history, surpassing the six-year, $54 million extension signed by the New England Patriots' Rob Gronkowski last year.

Gronkowski's deal isn't a perfect comparison. It arguably included a discount, since Gronkowski was just two years into his rookie deal when he signed it. And it also included an opportunity for the Patriots to opt out of the final four years (a realistic possibility because of his injury issues).

Regardless, that $9 million per year should represent a floor for Graham's value, especially since Graham has been more durable.

But how much more is Graham worth? Will a nice, round figure like six years, $60 million get it done?

Stocks eke out small gains on mixed earnings

Stocks?slumped in early trading Friday, climbed steadily the rest of the day, then ended little changed. A deluge of potentially market-moving events next week could make it an interesting week for stocks.

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Friday. Stocks ended the day little changed as traders began looking ahead to a packed schedule next week.

A mixed batch of earnings results gave investors little direction on Friday as traders began looking ahead to a packed schedule next week.

The?stock?market slumped in early trading, climbed steadily the rest of the day, then ended little changed.

Volume was thin as traders prepared for a deluge of potentially market-moving events next week: a Federal Reserve meeting, the government's monthly employment report and much more.

"Traders seem to be erring on the side of caution today," said Jeffrey Kleintop, the chief market strategist for LPL Financial.

Expedia plunged 27 percent, the worst fall in the Standard & Poor's 500 index. The online travel agency reported earnings late Thursday that badly missed analysts' expectations. Higher costs were the main culprit. Expedia lost $17.80 to $47.20.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index inched up 1.40 points, or 0.08 percent, to 1,691.65. The index ended the week with a tiny loss, the first this month.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.22 points, less than 0.1 percent, to 15,558.83. The Nasdaq composite index edged up 7.98 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,613.16.

It's halftime in the second-quarter earnings season, and corporate profits are shaping up better than some had feared.

Analysts forecast that earnings for companies in the S&P 500 increased 4.5 percent over the same period in 2012, according to S&P Capital IQ. At the start of July, they predicted earnings would rise 2.8 percent. Nearly seven out of every 10 companies have surpassed Wall Street's profit targets.

The results aren't exactly impressive, said Sam Stovall, the chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ. Investors often argue that analysts set the bar for earnings so low that most companies are bound to jump over it. On average, more than six of every 10 companies beat Wall Street's targets every quarter.

Starbucks posted results late Thursday that beat analysts' estimates. Lower costs for coffee beans and better sales of salads and sandwiches helped. Starbucks jumped $5.19, or 8 percent, to $73.36.

The?stock?market hasn't ended the week with a loss since June 21, when speculation that the Federal Reserve would start easing off its support for the economy rattled financial markets.

Kleintop cautioned against reading too much into the market's moves on Friday or the weekly loss. The S&P 500 is still up 5.3 percent for the month and 18.6 percent for the year.

"It's just one week down after four up," he said. "If the market just goes higher and higher week after week, you would see a major swoon when it runs into some disappointing news."

In the market for U.S. government bonds, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note slipped to 2.56 percent from 2.57 percent late Thursday.

Long-term interest rates have swung in a wide range since early May as traders attempt to anticipate the Fed's next move. The yield on the 10-year note went as low as 1.63 percent on May 1 and as high as 2.74 percent on July 5.

Greece woos tourists with longer shopping hours

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's parliament has approved legislation to extend Sunday opening hours for stores, in an effort to boost spending by tourists and stimulate the crisis-hit economy.

Lawmakers voted Wednesday in favor of legislation allowing department stores to open on seven Sundays during the year and smaller, independent shops the right to open every Sunday. Earlier rules kept most stores closed.

Small business associations, left-wing opposition parties, and senior members of the Greek Orthodox Church strongly oppose the new measures. Store owners and the Greek Communist party staged demonstrations in central Athens late Tuesday.

Greece is expecting a boost to its key tourism industry this year. More than a million visitors arrived in the January-March period, a 4.6 percent increase from 2012, according to the Bank of Greece.

Apple Is Testing Larger Screens for iPad and iPhone - Report

Apple is evaluating larger display panels for its iPhone smartphones and iPad tablets, according to a media report. The company is doing so in order to make gadgets that are more competitive against products currently available from its rivals, such as Samsung Electronics. Nonetheless, it cannot be excluded that Apple is also evaluating new form-factors in general.

In the recent quarters numerous companies, including, but not limited to arch-rival Samsung, have launched products in brand-new form-factors. Numerous makers released smartphones with ultra-large displays (5.5? and over) as well as various 2-in-1 and hybrid personal computers that can work both as a PC and a tablet. While publicly Apple has criticized both super-phones and hybrids, it does not mean that the company is not assessing possibilities to release such products.

Sources among Apple?s component suppliers revealed to the Wall Street Journal that the consumer electronics giant had asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than its current iPhone and also had demanded screen designs for a new tablet measuring slightly less than 13?. In theory, a tablet with 12.5" or 12.7" display could easily be a hybrid device, question is which operating system it would use.

Apple did not comment on the report. Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple, reaffirmed financial analysts during the quarterly conference call this week that the company has a number of competitive products in the pipeline, but never elaborated on the details.

?We are working on some stuff that we are really proud of and we will see how it does, and we will announce things when we are ready,? said Mr. Cook.

Yeah. They will go for the new iPhone next year for a 4.3" display and call it a revolution. Again.

Google officially unveils Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

Nexus 4

After weeks of speculation and leaks, the next version of Jelly Bean is finally official

Google has announced a new version of Android — 4.3 Jelly Bean — at its breakfast event in San Francisco today.

As expected, version 4.3 brings new features and tools for developers, including Bluetooth Low Energy support and new for devs to interact  with Android's notification center. OpenGL ES 3.0 is on-board, making Android the first platform to support the new standards. New DRM APIs allow content providers to deliver more options, for example Netflix has released a version of their app that streams in 1080p.

On the tablet side, "restricted" user profiles are pretty big news. They have built-in parental controls, and limited access for things like kiosk systems. This opens up a new way to use an Android tablet.

Primarily, though, this is another maintenance release for Jelly Bean, and the 4.3 release builds on what was already there in 4.1 and 4.2. Most of the new additions to the Android code base are focused on getting the OS prepared for connecting to wearable devices (with Bluetooth LE) and helping developers make even better applications.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will be hitting Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 10 devices from today, so now's the time to start hammering that "Check for updates" button, if you're into that sort of thing. Google Play edition phones are promised updates "very soon."

We'll bring you more on the new release as it comes. In the meantime, share your thoughts down in the comments.

Obama, lawmakers square off over NSA authority

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration squared off with skeptical lawmakers Tuesday over efforts to terminate the government's authority to collect phone records of millions of Americans, a proposition that exposed sharp divisions among members of Congress.

With a vote nearing on amendments to a $598.3 million bill to fund the military, the White House raised the alarm over a move to end the National Security Agency's authority under the USA Patriot Act, preventing the secretive surveillance agency from collecting records unless an individual is under investigation.

And in in an unusual, last-minute lobbying move, the administration dispatched Gen. Keith Alexander, head of the NSA, to Capitol Hill to urge lawmakers to oppose the amendment in separate, closed-door sessions with Republicans and Democrats.

"We oppose the current effort in the House to hastily dismantle one of our Intelligence Community's counterterrorism tools," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a late-night statement. "This blunt approach is not the product of an informed, open or deliberative process."

Carney said President Barack Obama is still open to discussing the balance between security and privacy with Americans and Congress in the wake of documents leaked last month by former NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden that revealed that the vast nature of the agency's phone and Internet surveillance. But he said Obama wants an approach that properly weighs what intelligence tools best keep America safe.

Tea party conservatives and liberal Democrats have backed the amendment, which dovetails with another to cut off funds for the NSA. Both measures drew criticism from the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who argued that the surveillance programs have helped disrupt numerous attempted terrorist attacks.

The House is likely to vote on the amendments Wednesday.
